Summer is upon us. And while we here at BuddyTV love those long days, cold drinks and hot dogs as much as anyone, the arrival of the warmer months also means one important thing to us:

It's the season of summer TV! When the big networks put their regular-rotation shows on the shelf to try out something a little wilder and wackier, and when some of our favorite cable gems finally return to brighten our nights. If you don't believe me when I say that this summer is jam-packed with greatness, just check out our new printable summer TV calendar and see for yourself!

The BuddyTV Guide app is about making TV watching faster, smoother and more fun, which is why these tips are great to use all year-long, but are especially handy right now, when the TV schedule is full of new choices to discover, and when we'd rather spend our long, lazy days outdoors than sifting through the normal, cluttered channel guide. Think about it: Whether you're lounging poolside or sitting at the top of a Ferris wheel, if you have your smartphone with you, you can find what you want to watch later with the BuddyTV Guide app, right then and there!

Here are my top five tips for how to make the most of your BuddyTV Guide app this summer:

Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.

#1 Find new shows to watch.

Check out the "Summer Series" quicklist on the Homepage (above right) to see an up-to-date list of which summer shows are airing brand-new episodes in the near future. With highly anticipated new summer shows like Dallas, The Newsroom, Anger Management and others coming up soon, the Summer Series quicklist is the simplest way to know what's airing when.

Bonus Tip: Watch a new show that you like? Rate it and/or add it to your Watchlist, and the app will populate similar titles in your Homepage and "Suggested" listings. Don't like it? Hit the Trashcan icon next to the name of the show, and we won't suggest it to you in the future.

reminders.PNG#2 Don't miss an episode!

The summer lineup can be a bit confusing, with summer juggernauts like America's Got Talent and Big Brother airing multiple nights per week, and other favorites like Teen Wolf, Love in the Wild and The Glee Project hosting their premiere episodes on special nights at special times.

With the BuddyTV Guide, it's easy to stay on top of the schedule with customizable reminders (at left). Find the show you want to watch, then add it to your Watchlist, and then tap on the alerts (under the star-rating) to tweak your reminders to suit your needs.

Bonus Tip: Publish your Watchlist shows to iCal, and we'll set up a personalized TV-watching calendar for you. There's no shame in blocking out some me-time with your TV.

#3 Know what's on, no matter where your travels take you.

Traveling this summer, and staying somewhere with a TV? No need to channel surf looking for something worth watching. Simply bust out your BuddyTV Guide, enter the local zipcode in your settings, and see the complete local lineup in the palm of your hand.

Bonus Tip: You don't have to be out of town to enjoy this feature. Summer's the time to relish your relaxation, so don't bother getting up to find the remote. Just grab your smartphone or tablet, open the BuddyTV Guide and explore your channel listings without getting out of bed!

catch-up.PNG#4 Catch up on favorites.

Chances are, you have some favorite shows that you're not completely caught up on ... yet. Before the next season premieres, here's an easy way to keep track of which episodes you've seen while you work on catching up.

The BuddyTV Guide has detailed program information for most popular shows out there, including episode names and numbers, descriptions, original airdates and (in many cases) recaps, all available in the app, so you can stay on top of where you are in all those plot twists. If you've seen an episode, click the "Seen It" box (that eye with the checkmark) next to the episode, and the next time you log in, you'll know what your next viewing assignment should be.

Bonus Tip: We're a whole lot more than listings. Check out "News" and "Slideshows" under a program to read our editorial team's news and views on the subject.

#5 Explore your online options.

Most of us have at least a show or two that we've been meaning to watch, but haven't gotten around to yet. Summer's the perfect time to finally watch those shows your friends have been raving about, and the BuddyTV Guide is the perfect way to do it. The app easily integrates Netflix, Amazon Instant and (NEW!) iTunes into your listings, so you can see all your options for watching in one spot. You can turn these on and off in Settings, under Playable Sources.

Simply search for the show you want to watch, and see the different streaming options listed across the bottom: Is the show available for free on Netflix? Is there a marathon airing on cable soon? Can you buy the whole season on Amazon or iTunes right now? The BuddyTV Guide lays out all your options so you can spend less time searching, and more time enjoying the show.

Bonus Tip: This is also a great way to find streaming movies to watch on the fly! And, as always, if you rate a show or movie highly, we'll suggest similar titles you'll probably like, too.

I hope these tips help you make the most of your TV viewing time this summer. But with an app this flexible and customizable, the best way to use the BuddyTV Guide App is simple: Whatever way you want!
