Folks, there's no way to get around it. "The Woman in the Whirlpool" is a sobering episode, if you'll pardon the pun. We're dealing the aftermath of Booth lying about his resumed gambling activity and Brennan asking him to leave The Mighty Hut, 2.0, right? There's no way we could have a comedic piece after an upset like that. So, what do we do? We hunker down and look for the good in what is before us because there is good in this episode, and it's more than the quality of the portrayals, Hodgins' latest toy, or a solid case built around some interesting remains. There are some nuggets to hang onto and look for as you sit down (without your dinner, unless you want to be wearing it) to watch Bones' 20th episode of season 10.
In accordance with tradition, I have several teases for you that are cryptic enough to preserve the element of surprise, yet (hopefully) intriguing enough to get you excited about your first viewing of "The Woman in the Whirlpool." You'll have to let me know if I accomplish this goal by writing in the comment box below. Let's get this bone on the road.
#7 The Victim Is Not Alone In Her Obsession
You've already heard that this episode's victim has an obsession with cookie jars, but you'll never guess who shares that obsession! Hint: He's been known as the king of a special kind of pop and he's been given the biggest of what he spent his life creating.
#6 Brennan Makes a Friendly Gesture
Brennan gives a thoughtful gift to a colleague which inspires an emotional exchange between the two. It's not a first, but it is a beautiful thing.
#5 Someone Highly Unexpected Smiles at Booth's 'Fine Face'
You don't usually see this kind of thing in commercial television, so it truly surprised me. Though Booth is somewhat oblivious to the reaction he receives from this character, it's obvious enough that you won't possibly miss it. If you don't blink a lot, that is.
#4 Sweets and Aubrey Have More In Common Than Anyone Knew
Sweets wasn't as enamored with food as Aubrey is, but it turns out that some of their other 'tastes' are quite similar.
#3 You May See Someone You've Met In "The Woman in the Whirlpool"
That's right. This cryptic tease is somewhat of a cheat because you probably already know exactly who I'm talking about. If you are reading this article, there's a good chance you'll be thinking along the same lines as I was as I viewed the episode not once, but three times. What a surprise to find that I knew someone who would show up on Bones?
#2 Someone Makes a Huge Impression on Hodgins
The King of the Lab might have met his match, people. I never thought I'd see the day when someone would out-geek the reigning lab royalty, but that day has come. I did not see that coming.
#1 Hope Comes From an Absent Source
Hope doesn't spring forth during "The Woman in the Whirlpool;" it hobbles uncertainly toward the final curtain on what just might be its last leg. However, the most encouraging sign for Brennan and Booth's relationship comes from a character that isn't even in this episode.
That's all I have for you, Boneheads. Enjoy the show, and keep lovin' Bones.
Bones airs Thursdays at 8pm on FOX.
