The newest network to hop on the early renewal train is ABC. The network has just announced the renewal of 7 of its scripted series for the 2012-2013 season. Which shows made the cut? And which still await their fates? Keep reading to find out.
Renewed DramasABC has renewed five of its dramatic programs. Veteran hits
Castle and
Grey's Anatomy earned their fifth and ninth seasons, respectively, thanks to the news. The other two dramas to receive early orders from ABC -- the dark soap opera
Revenge and the fairy-tale epic
Once Upon a Time -- are new shows finishing up their first seasons. Both programs were surprise hits of the 2011-2012 season.
The honor of being the first of ABC's mid-season shows to get a pickup goes to
Scandal, the political drama from Shonda Rhimes. It is now set for a second season on the network.
CBS renews 18 shows for 2012-2013 Renewed ComediesABC was kind with its renewals of comedies today as well. In total, four comedies have made the cut.
The ratings, awards and critical darling that is
Modern Family was certainly a no-brainer for renewal (it's a go for season 4), but the other picks were not as certain. One new 2011-2012 comedy -- the surreal
Suburgatory -- has been welcomed back for another season as well. The third renewal,
The Middle -- an oft-unsung favorite of families and some critics -- got picked up for its fourth season.
Happy Endings is the final comedy renewal announced so far. Now going into its third season, the show had a surprising climb in ratings over the past year.
One more comedy -- the retro Tim Allen vehicle,
Last Man Standing -- is also expected to get a renewal notice soon. This renewal would mean a second season for the shows.
NBC Renewals: Grimm, Smash,
Community and More!Still WaitingThe renewal news wasn't so good for several other ABC programs not mentioned in the announcement.
After
Last Man Standing gets its news, that takes care of most of ABC's current comedies. Only the brand-new
Don't Trust the B--- in Apartment 23 is still waiting for renewal or cancellation news. ABC's other non-renewed sitcom,
Cougar Town, was announced as picked up by TBS earlier on Thursday.
Dramas on ABC are not faring so well as the comedies, with several shows still awaiting a final word from the network. One drama, the comedic
GCB (originally meant to take the place of the departing
Desperate Housewives), has already been canceled.
Of the two returning bubble shows,
Private Practice, has the better shot at renewal if ABC has space for it.
Body of Proof, which has seen a decreasing audience throughout its second season, is more likely headed to cancellation.
The other dramas waiting for renewal are all freshman shows on the network. These shows are
Missing, Pan Am -- off the air since early 2012 -- and
The River. With the possible exception of
Missing, there is little chance of these shows getting a renewal when the moderately successful
GCB got the ax.
