Exclusive Interview: Marjorie of 'America's Next Top Model'
Thursday, November 13, 2008

Last night on America's Next Top Model, Marjorie was eliminated from the competition after weeks of being warned by Tyra that her lack of confidence was getting the best of her.  Marjorie started out the season strong, as a frontrunner even, but couldn't seem to keep her strong photos going as the weeks wore on.  She landed in the bottom two twice in a row and this week proved to be her last.  Today, Marjorie spoke to BuddyTV in an exclusive interview and said that confidence was not a problem for her at all.  Read on to find out what she has to say about her favorite photo, how she felt about the way she was portrayed, and how she feels about her experience on America's Next Top Model.

Below, you will find the transcript and the mp3 of the interview.

I’m wondering if modeling is something that you always thought about growing up or is this something that you can became interested in as you got older?

Before the show, I was not expecting to model, although there was kind of an interest. Now that I’ve been exposed to that possibility, I really want to give it 100%. I’ve had the chance to work with so many notable professionals in the field and have produced a substantial number of photographs for portfolio. I can’t really complain. It really was a dream come true and it really fortified my interest in the fashion industry and particularly, in the ability to control my external physicality and my appearance in genera to produce a great first impression which is valuable in any field.

Do you have a favorite photo that you took this season?

I actually… my all-time favorite photo is my dramatic photo with Tyra Banks. It took a really long time to actually finally set up the final location but she really shoots my range when she trusted me. I had to really elongate my silhouette and she made me think about interesting shapes that I hadn’t thought about. She really got me out of the niche that I had carved for myself with the hunchback but I really liked it. I think it shows another facet of my personality and shows that I can be really strong in photographs.

You started out the season so strong and then, halfway through, it looked like your confidence was shaken. Looking back on it, do you know what happened or what was going through your mind?

I never really had a confidence problem. I know it might not seem that way to viewers. I worry about my overexpression and awkward, nervous persona because I think that sometimes I would be really confident and sometimes I would question myself. I’m not unidimensional. I have to say that my personality is much closer to the composed facet I showed during my final judging, rather than the extreme nervousness that’s frequently criticized. I didn’t show this side much because I would often be called boring and it happened on numerous occasions, notably things that weren’t aired. As a result, it naturally overemphasized my uncertainty, kind of early on, when discussing my thoughts in the confessional or after photo shoots. I feared being eliminated for lacking personality. What the public sees are my disclosures of would be private moments of decompression. It was completely new, unchartered territory for myself. I really impressed myself and it was a really high pressure situation. I didn’t pretend to know it all and I question myself a lot but I don’t think I should be necessarily criticized or judged.

Did you expect to come into this competition making friends that you’ll take outside of this?

Actually, I went into the competition not thinking that I should keep the competitor wall in tact with the other girls. I was really interested in the competition also because it kind of gives a representative sample of the girls across America, girls I wouldn’t necessarily come into contact with. It was really interesting to be able to interact with these girls 24/7, which kind of upped the tension but surprisingly, it was a lot less catty than I expected. I come out of it really confident and fairly glad about my representation, although there were some moments I feel were a bit unidimensional. I definitely think it was a dream come true and what’s wonderful about the competition is that you can take whatever you like from it. I’m the luckiest person in the world and I can dream about what I want to pursue from this platform and maybe in the future, I’ll have it come true.
