The time has come for Season 10's Top 11 contestants to go head to head with some truly great music. I've been waiting for less vague themes than, say, "a song from a year of your choosing," and this week I get my wish--the
American Idol finalists are singing Classic Motown! For fun, I'm making predictions of what everyone will sing (or what I'd like them to sing).
Overall, I think this is Stefano's week to shine, but you KNOW I'm looking forward to whatever Scotty will put forth. Also, Haley has been in the bottom two twice in a row now, and I worry that this might not be the week to redeem her. But hey, it could happen (
MCWORLD!). There are SO many good Motown songs, but this week also has some great disaster potential.
Haley Reinhart - "Tell Him" by The ExcitersAt first I thought Haley might struggle this week, but then I keep hearing great songs she could sing well. Of course, who knows what she'll actually pick since she didn't pick "Black Velvet" last week and that was the most perfect song choice for her ever.
Stefano Langone - "Uptight" by Stevie WonderDo you think Stefano is allowed to do any more Stevie Wonder? Or maybe he's cashed in all his Wonder chips. If it's an option, this is the song for him. He sang "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" for his audition, so I wonder if he'll do that one again.
Pia Toscano - "Stop! In the Name of Love" by The SupremesOne thing I think we can count on is Pia singing "Endless Love" with someone in a group Motown medley for Thursday's results show. I don't think it's too much to ask for Pia to sing some Diana Ross. And then Pia will rise to stardom and marry Jimmy Iovine, leaving the rest of the group behind and Jacob Lusk will sing "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" before Pia brings it home with "Listen." I love
Dreamgirls! Or maybe Pia will sing Aretha Franklin. Yeah, she'll probably sing "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman."
Paul McDonald - "Reach Out I'll Be There" by The Four TopsThis song would be great for Paul because he could still inject it with his signature style, but it might force him to sustain a few notes along the way and prove he knows what notes are. He could also sing "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.
Jacob Lusk - "What's Going On" by Marvine GayeThere are a lot of songs that could show him off, but he may want to stay away from ballads. But wouldn't you love to see him sing "Natural Woman" or "Touch Me in the Morning"? I think "What's Going On" would be spot on for Jacob.
Lauren Alaina - "Please Mr. Postman" by The MarvelettesIs this song about waiting for a letter too simple? Maybe she could sing "Baby Love" by Diana Ross and the Supremes and get in on the
Dreamgirls reenactment I described earlier.
James Durbin - "Do You Wanna Dance" by Bobby FreemanIf this song counts as Motown, I think James should sing it with his own scarf-tailed spin. I could also see him singing "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" or "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown.
Naima Adedapo - "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave)" by Martha Reeves & The VandellasThis song may just be where all of Naima's previous song choices collide. As long as she doesn't turn out a reggae section and as long as Jimmy Iovine doesn't try to make it too "2011," I think Naima is in good shape with this song.
Casey Abrams - "Shotgun" by Junior Walker & The All StarsThis song is hip, fun, and has enough musical integrity for Casey to get down to. Plus, he can show off his smoky voice without it sounding like an impression. I could also see him singing "War" by Edwin Starr, although that might be more of a risk after last week. I'd love to see Casey Abrams show us a different side with some Marvin Gaye, though.
Thia Megia - "My Guy" by Mary WellsThis has struggled with song choice in the past, but who doesn't like a song that reminds them of
Sister Act? The answer is no one. Everyone loves that movie, and maybe the costume department could help her out by sort of dressing her like a nun. But in all seriousness, Thia has a nice lower register and sounds good when she's singing stuff like Adele, so this could be a good song for her.
Scotty McCreery - "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by The TemptationsI want Scotty to sing ALL the songs (ever made), but I feel like he will sing something by The Temptations. I will be a little bummed if it's "My Girl" and pleased if it's something more along the lines of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" or "Ain't Too Proud to Beg."
