American Idol: Taylor Hicks Talks Theater
Having been part of the phenomenal American Idol, Taylor Hicks has decided to move on to higher things.  These days, he's been touring the country playing Teen Angel on a production of Grease, and it's a role that seems to have given him a passion for the stage.

"I'd been offered some roles previously, but I wanted to make sure the part was right for me," he said.  Having just appeared as a guest performer on American Idol, Hicks has a tight schedule to maintain now that he's a theatre star.

Taylor Hicks achieved fame by winning the fifth season of the hit reality competition, but earned even more attention afterwards.  His debut single "Do I Make You Proud" was released in 2006, jumpstarting his career in music.  Despite his success, Hicks was always inclined towards performing on stage.  This is why he decided to take on Grease, getting the role originated by Alan Paul.

"From an observer's standpoint I saw him as kind of an introductory character - that's the best way I can describe it," Hicks revealed.  "I wanted a role that was a great way to introduce myself to the stage and observe what musical theater is all about.  It's a small but flashy role that I can really understand and have a great time with."

At an early age, the musician already sealed his fate.  "I kind of always had this intuitive feeling, even from when I started traveling at 17, that if I did keep with it I would have a chance - an opportunity to break through."

Indeed, Taylor Hicks has established himself in the entertainment industry.  However, musical theater is not the last endeavor he'll be tackling.

"Broadway was one of the most amazing things I've ever done as a performer," he said.  "But I think at some point I want to break into TV and film.  I want to learn as much as I can first, though - start kind of small.  A career is a marathon, not a sprint.  Every morning I get up and remember that the opportunities I've been given are a blessing."
