American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Kris Allen
American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Kris Allen
Kris Allen is going to sneak up on people.  I wasn't a big fan initially, but all it took was a little jaunt on YouTube to convince me.  Kris, in the Top 36 performance that got him voted into the Top 13, sang Michael Jackson's “Man in the Mirror.”  While it was a solid performance that showed off a nice voice, Kris has a lot more to give us than that.  Dude can play the guitar – watch out, because we might have a better looking, more talented Jason Castro on our hands.  If that's the case, there might be no limit on how far Kris Allen goes in the competition.

Strengths:

While Kris Allen's voice isn't as big or as powerful as some of his counterparts, you get the feeling that Kris knows exactly what he's doing with it.  His easy-going, Southern charm will be a hit with audiences everywhere, especially the women who are already smitten with his good looks.  And then there's the guitar thing, which should be a major asset for Kris.  There are two men in the competition who can play the piano (Scott MacIntyre and Matt Giraud), but Kris is the only guitar player that we know of (maybe someone else will surprise later on down the line).

Weaknesses:

Don't think Kris has a powerful enough voice to pull of the big ballads.  He'll have to be wise in his song choices.  If he becomes too one-note of a performer, the judges will eventually call him out for it.  But, looking at the rest of the competition, Kris doesn't have much in the way of glaring weaknesses.

Best-Case Scenario:

Kris improves, wows audiences with his guitar playing and sweet singing, and wins American Idol.  There, I said it – Kris could very well be our new American Idol.  He has that kind of potential.

Worst-Case Scenario:

Kris makes a slew of poor song choices, his voice proves too weak to compete with the rest of the Top 13 and it turns out that the quiet Southern charm is actually a dearth of personality.  Even if everything goes wrong, his looks and unobtrusive voice will propel him at least into the Top 10.
