The first day of Comic-Con kicked off with a bang thanks to the panel for Showtime's Dexter, the Emmy-nominated hit coming off its best season yet with the most shocking ending in recent TV history, the death of Rita. The cast and crew were on hand to show a trailer for Dexter season 5 and talk about what the major themes will be and what's in store for Dexter and Deb.

Here are some of the highlights from the trailer they played for Dexter season 5:

-Season 5 picks up right where season 4 left off, with Rita dead in the bathtub. When the cops arrive, Dexter says "It was me." It's safe to assume that's not a murder confession.

-Quinn is suspicious of Dexter, saying that the husband would be the prime suspect. He'd better watch out, because we all remember what happened to Doakes, the last cop who was a little too suspicious of Dexter Morgan.

-Rita's kids are obviously angry that Dexter wasn't able to protect their mom. And it seems Dexter will kill again because it calms him down and makes him a better father.

Additionally, the Dexter stars and creators on the panel talked about season 5:

Executive producer Chip Johannessen: Season 5 is all about the nightmare that is all Dexter's own creation. Clearly based on the "It was me" comment, he'll be grappling with feeling responsible for Rita's death.

Star Jennifer Carpenter: She says that season 5 will be about Debra putting together the pieces and figuring out more about her brother based on his strange reaction to Rita's death. She'll also play a bigger role as an aunt to Dexter's motherless kids.

Star Michael C. Hall: During the audience question part, one of the better parts had to be a question about how the show can top the Trinity Killer storyline. Hall's response was that "Dexter is going to go to Hell and kill the Devil himself." That's probably a joke. Probably.

Finally, season 5 will be accompanied with animated webisodes chronicling the origins of Dexter's serial killing ways. Check out the trailer for Dexter Early Cuts: Dark Echo:

Overall, the panel revealed a lot about the fact that season 5 will be all about dealing with the consequences of Rita's death and the difficulty Dexter will have in keeping up appearances. Dexter season 5 premieres September 26.
