Born on April 16, 1980 in Austin, Texas, Paul Sanchez-Garcia London was educated at Westlake High School, where he helped create the school's first wrestling team. While there, he became the wrestling team captain, first varsity letterman and held the record for the fastest pinfall time of 7.4 seconds. Upon graduation, he trained in several wrestling schools until he met Rudy Gonzales, head trainer of Texas Wrestling Academy, where London further honed his skills. In 2000, London entered Southwest Texas State University to study theater.
London debuted on Ring of Honor on March 2002, where he fought Chris Marvel. He also fought Michael Shane in Street Fights, a Triple Threat Match and a Gauntlet match. In December that year, he captured the ROH Number One Contender's Trophy but lost the ROH Championship match to then-champion Xavier. A few months later, London fought competed in a Triple Threat Match for the Number One Contender's Trophy and defeated A.J. Styles. Subsequently working on ROH, he also made brief appearances in Japanese promotion Pro Wrestling ZERO-ONE and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
In the middle of 2003, London signed with WWE and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling. He debuted on Smackdown, losing to Brock Lesnar in October of that year. In January 2004, he began a tag team with Billy Kidman and later fought with the Dudley Boyz to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. In March 2005, he became the number one contender for Chavo Guerrero's WWE Cruiserweight Championship, which he eventually won in a cruiserweight battle royal. However, he lost the Cruiserweight Title to Nunzio (James Maritato). By October, London and Kendrick became the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions of all time. London and Kendrick were drafted to the Raw brand in June 2007 during the Supplemental Draft. A day later, they won their debut match against The World's Greatest Tag Team and in September, won one contender's match for Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch's World Tag Team Championship.
