Canadian actor Niall Matter was born on October 20, 1980 in Edmonton, Alberta. He started acting when he was 13 years old, after being approached his drama teacher in school. He went on to appear in several stage productions in high school, and upon his graduation from Alberta High School Zone Provincials, he was awarded Best Male Actor accolades. He then studied at the Vancouver Film School.
Upon graduation, Matter started to attend auditions in Vancouver, and landed several roles in television commercials. His big break came in 2007, when he got a role in the teen series The Best Years. He took on the role of Trent Hamilton, a charmer who comes from one of Boston’s wealthiest families. He is interested in Samantha Best (Charity Shea), but he doesn’t know that Dawn Vargaz (Athena Karkanis) likes him; he tends to neglect her whenever she’s around.
That same year, Matter starred in the television movie Beyond Loch Ness, where he co-starred with Brian Krause. He has since made headway into television, appearing in guest roles in shows such as Stargate SG-1 and Fear Itself. He eventually snagged a regular role in the second season of the science fiction series Eureka, where he played rebellious genius Zane Donovan. He also appeared in the film adaptation of the graphic novel Watchmen.
