Goil Amornvivat was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and moved to the U.S. when he was 12 years old. He earned his architecture degree at Carnegie Mellon and his master's degree from Yale. After his graduation, renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern personally chose Amornvivat to work for him. It was during this stage that Amornvivat participated on the design and construction of the International Quilt Study Center in Nebraska. His ultra modern designs have been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
