Emilie de Ravin was born on December 27, 1981 in Mount Eliza, Victoria, Australia. She started taking ballet lessons when she was only nine years old, and her training helped her to get into the prestigious Australian Ballet School at the tender age of fifteen. The school gave de Ravin the opportunity to perform with the Australian Ballet Company and Danceworld 301. She then pursued her acting training at both the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Australia and the Prime Time Actors Studio in Los Angeles.
Her first starring role was on the Canadian television series, Beastmaster. She portrayed a female version of the Demon Curupira, a creature whose most noticeable feature is its backward feet. She was also on the teenage sci-fi drama series, Roswell, where she played the role of Tess Harding for two seasons. Her subsequent projects include Carrie (made-for-tv movie), The Handler, CSI: Miami, Brick, Santa’s Slay and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes.
In 2004, de Ravin landed the role of single mother Claire Littleton on the highly-followed television series, Lost. She shares a 2006 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with her Lost co-stars.
She and actor Josh Janowicz were engaged on New Year’s Day of 2005, and were wed on June 19, 2006. She then went on to tell In Style Weddings Magazine that their “life together always comes before work. You can't buy love or family.” They had been dating for four years before they tied the knot, but their marriage lasted only six months, as de Ravin separated from Janowicz on January of the following year.
Currently, de Ravin holds residence in Los Angeles, California, where she lives with her dog, Bella. Some of her favorite activities are painting, shopping and exercising.
