Following Wednesday's announcement of the
SAG Award nominees,
the Golden Globes will present their nominations for the best in TV and
film Thursday morning. While the SAG Awards tend to be dull and
predictable, the Golden Globes often embrace newer shows.
Last year the Golden Globes were the first to honor Homeland and star Claire Danes. They also nominated other new shows like
Game of Thrones,
Boss,
Revenge,
American Horror Story,
Necessary Roughness,
Enlightened,
Episodes and
New Girl.
So while you can expect old favorites like
Homeland,
Mad Men,
30 Rock and
Modern Family to pick up plenty of nominations, here are my predictions for what new shows they might honor.
DRAMAThe NewsroomThis Aaron Sorkin series on HBO is right up the alley of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It should definitely get nominations for Drama Series and Lead Actor for Jeff Daniels, and maybe even for Emily Mortimer as Lead Actress. If they really love it, Sam Waterston could even sneak in for Supporting Actor.
VegasThe Golden Globes are far more accepting of CBS crime procedurals than any other awards show, nominating Simon Baker for
The Mentalist and The Guardian and even selecting Anthony LaPaglia as a winner for
Without a Trace. They also love movie stars, so Dennis Quaid fits the bill and could get a nomination. Michael Chiklis has won rave reviews as a mob boss and could get nominated in Supporting Actor.
ElementaryAs I just wrote, the Golden Globes are willing to embrace CBS procedural stars, and Jonny Lee Miller is wonderfully quirky and showy as Sherlock Holmes. It could also be amusing if Miller got in for Drama Actor and Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for Miniseres/TV Movie Actor for both playing Sherlock Holmes.
COMEDYThe New NormalThe HFPA loves Ryan Murphy. They've nominated
American Horror Story, and
Glee and
Nip/Tuck both won for Series. So it seems like a no-brainer that his new comedy will get in, possibly competing with
Glee for Comedy Series. Even if it doesn't get in, Ellen Barkin will most likely score a nomination for Supporting Actress. For the rest of the cast, I think Andrew Rannells has the best shot at a nomination for Lead Actor, though it's a longshot.
Girls and VeepHBO's one-two punch already had their day in the sun at the Emmy Awards, but this is the first chance the Golden Globes have to recognize them. It's a safe bet that both shows will score nominations for Comedy Series and Lead Actress.
Go OnThe Golden Globes have been kind to
Friends stars. Courteney Cox was nominated for
Cougar Town and Matt LeBlanc won for
Episodes last year. And Perry was nominated in 2007 for Lead Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie. So signs are favorable that he might get another nomination for this NBC sitcom.
The Mindy ProjectThis is probably the least likely of the new nominees, but Mindy Kaling has been extraordinary on this show and since they recognized Zooey Deschanel last year, maybe Mindy can be the new girl at this year's Golden Globes. The only thing standing in her way is a competitive field with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Lena Dunham, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Zooey Deschanel, Laura Linney and Edie Falco.
What new shows do you want to see nominated? Are you hoping for any cool surprises like Madeleine Stowe for
Revenge last year? Or Katey Sagal for
Sons of Anarchy and Scott Caan for
Hawaii Five-0 the year before?
