Ratings Fail to Save 'Ugly Betty', ABC Cancels Show
Ratings Fail to Save 'Ugly Betty', ABC Cancels Show
That's it; Ugly Betty will soon be making its fashion fierce exit.  The network has confirmed that they have canceled the series, making this season its last.

Variety released the announcement this morning, along with a joint statement from executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC Entertainment Group chairman Steve McPherson.  He knew this was coming and they're actually prepared for it.

"We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this 'Ugly Betty's' final season and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion," Horta and McPherson announced.

"We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell," they added.

ABC has also shortened the episode order for the series, from the original 22 to 20.  Apparently, Ugly Betty still has four episodes left to produce for its last season, so it's bound to end in the middle of April.  There's still time to wrap things up though, but it's still a bit too sudden for us fans.

Well, we can't say we didn't expect this.  Despite the creative resurgence in recent episodes, it was just too difficult to keep up.  Ratings have continued to dwindle for Ugly Betty, from its constant move in schedules and the line-up it got stuck with.

Earlier in the season, the network began airing the show on Fridays.  This made it worse for Ugly Betty, so the decision to move it to Wednesdays was made.  However, this still didn't help the predicament.

Still, there's nothing more we can do about the fate of the comedy.  We can only hope those last episodes will provide us with enough closure.  There are storylines that need to be concluded, and those braces have got to come off.

But for those who can't let go of Ugly Betty entirely, a spin-off starring Marc and Amanda wouldn't be such a bad idea.  If it ever sees the light of day, that is.
