You'd better be because week 4 of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars is adding a whole bunch of new styles: Bollywood, contemporary and the jitterbug are just some of the performances we get to see. Add to this a new guest judge, Paula Abdul, and craziness is the only possible outcome. Enjoy all the lunacy in this recap!

Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.

Need a reminder to tell you which dances you will see? Then here you go:

  • Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd -- Bollywood
  • Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel -- Disco
  • Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough -- Mambo
  • Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff -- Hip Hop
  • Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke -- Bolero
  • Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani -- Jitterbug
  • Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy -- Contemporary
  • Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy -- Charleston
  • Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas -- Rock & Roll

Sorry about the magicallly appearing and disappearing recap. Technical difficulties. Sigh. Hopefully it's back for good now.

They get to do lifts tonight. That's fair, considering that many of the styles of the night pretty much need them. Also, Paula Abdul is there and much less worried about Len than she was of Simon Cowell.

What happens backstage at Dancing with the Stars? Will there be anymore DWTS curveballs this season? Find out in our interview with host Tom Bergeron!

Paula Abdul seems to talk a lot. But what she says is mostly amusing, so that's OK.

First of of the night...

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Dancing the Charleston

My Comments: Kirstie is in a cake.

At least the Charleston is a style of dance that works great with Kirstie's personality. I can't tell if she is good or not. Because my knowledge of this dance is pretty much limited to the high-school dance scene in It's a Wonderful Life. But this is a lot of fun.

Judges' Comments
Len: "You turn Monday into a fun-day." "I would have liked it a little cleaner here or there, but I'll tell you what -- for fun, you are the best."
Bruno: "You're a mad woman, and I love you for it."
Carrie Ann: "Tonight you look stunning." "Your dancing is fabulous -- you were playing to your strengths."
Paula: "You just take on the role -- each week -- of the characters."

Scores: 7.5+7.5+7.5+7.5 = 30

Uh oh. The Results Show will be airing at 8pm tomorrow night! Not 9. They're moving it up to avoid the next Presidential debate
.

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas
Dancing Rock & Roll

My Comments: Bristol Palin can do a cartwheel. She is officially better at dancing than me.

"I just don't want to be dancing with a rabbit." Ladies and gentlemen, we have the quote of the night!

I am so thinking of American Graffiti right now. Probably because I've been listening to the soundtrack all my life. That might explain it. Also, this is basically the dancing we saw in the movie. It is fun and cute, but Mark was right in the video package -- this looks super simple. And Bristol is dancing without flair.

Judges' Comments
Len: "The only real failure is the failure to try... You came out and gave it your all."
Bruno: "You finally got pumping up out there!" "You were focused."
Carrie Ann: "Good job! I am so impressed with you! You are really coming to life out there."
Paula: "It looks like you're starting to have fun." "I'm proud of you."

Scores: 8+8+8+8 = 32

I don't think the judges were watching the same dance as me. I mean, seriously???

Oh good grief. NO RESULTS SHOW NEXT WEEK!!!

Why are they making my life so complicated?

Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel
Dancing Disco

My Comments: They're doing Studio 54? Shouldn't there be more drugs involved for that? Although there may have been drugs involved in the choice of that Cookie Monster coat.

I don't know if this is as smooth as some of the professional versions of disco that have been seen, but it's awfully good otherwise. Sabrina is going all over that dance floor. She also looks nicely in-step with Louis throughout. A slightly looser dance might have been more perfect, but that's the only complaint I can come up with.

Judges' Comments
Len: "I'm back. It's 1978. I've got my black suit, my white suit..."
Bruno: "Sabrina the Disco Diva!" "You lost timing. Twice." (Carrie Ann disagrees.)
Carrie Ann: "I don't know if she was off-beat or maybe you were off-beat..." "This time you showed us something very different!"
Paula: "The feathers, the hair, the glitter, the sequins, the polyester... It was fantastic."

Scores: 9+9+8.5+9 = 35.5

Next week, we are going to have team dances. They will be freestyle team dances. That should be interesting.

Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke
Dancing the bolero

My Comments: Apparently, bolero is not just a style used for ice-dancing several decades ago (super points if you get the reference!).

Wow. Cheryl hides behind Emmitt quite thoroughly. Also, there is smoke. A lot of smoke. This is kind of a cool dance. Very dramatic. It's like someone took contemporary dance and Latinized it. If this is bolero, I like it. And Emmitt is really stepping it up -- some of the times he whips Cheryl around and/or lifts her are kind of amazing.

Judges' Comments
Len: "Bolero is flow... And I thought you coped." "Lovely fluidity of movement."
Bruno: "The mood was steamier than August in Louisiana!"
Carrie Ann: "I love this job some days." "There is nothing better than watching a big, burly man get sexy."
Paula: "It was exquisite. It was sensual. You are a sexy beast!"

Scores: 9+9+9+9 = 36

Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd
Dancing Bollywood

My Comments: Gilles at least looks the part. You have to give the guy that. He would fit in perfectly in an Indian musical. This does look pretty impressive -- even if the constantly moving camera maks it hard to follow the dancing. Obviously they got past the "We can't do it!" night. If there's any sort of curve for making it through a difficult dance, they deserve the help.

Judges' Comments
Len: "I know nothing about Bollywood dancing, but I know what I like. And I like this."
Bruno: "A Bollywood superstar is born!"
Carrie Ann: "That was beyond belief." "Fantastic!"
Paula: "Dahling! That was about as smoldering spicy as a vindaloo!" (They probably shouldn't have sat Paula next to Bruno.)

Scores: 10+9.5+10+10 = 39.5

Ladies and gentlmen, we have 10s!

Donny Osmond will duet with Susan Boyle during the Results Show. And the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers will perform as well.

Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani
Dancing the jitterbug

My Comments: Is it just me, or does Melissa look a lot like Cordelia from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Not that this has anything to do with the dancing.

Is this the jitterbug? I don't know what I thought it was, but this doesn't seem like it. I will accept the authority of Tony Dovolani on this though. There may be a little too much emphasis on tricks in this one, but they are cool. The dancing is pretty amazing too. Just not quite connected enough because of all the tricks.

Judges' Comments
Len: "You are a class dancer. Whatever dance you do, it's clean and it's correct."
Bruno: "Melissa, what a swinger!" "Some of those lifts were so ambitious." "It was near perfection."
Carrie Ann: "You have this amazing way of making everything look effortless."
Paula: "You two fit together like hand-to-glove." "There's so much joy, the footwork was impeccable."

Scores: 9+9+9.5+9.5 = 37

Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough
Dancing the mambo

My Comments: If you hadn't realized it already, Shawn Johnson is an incredible gymnast.

These guys dance really, really well together. The dance is almost insanely fast. There are, of course, tricks. As you would expect in a Shawn dance. But the rest of the dance, tricks aside, is kind of amazing. They're all over the place and dancing up a storm.

Of course Shawn still isn't out of breath.

Judges' Comments
Len: "Good news from Goodman. I liked it. I really liked it."
Bruno: "Sexy! Mesmerizing! Out of this world!"
Carrie Ann: "If I were the other contestants, I'd be a little scared of you right now."
Paula: "While I'm giving your critique, I'm just going to be touching him. And this is how I feel."

Scores
: 10+9.5+10+10 = 39.5

Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff
Dancing hip hop

My Comments: I love that they're randomly getting massages while talking about hip hop.

Despite her issues in rehearsal, Karina looks fine. As for Apolo, he seems to have the right attitude for this. There are a few issues with being in sync at times, but they're not major. Did Karina just slip is a spinny thing? If so, they're in trouble.

Yes. Yes she did. Ouch.

Judges' Comments
Len: "You were out there smoking! Karina, to be honest, I wasn't even looking at you, so I don't care."
Bruno: "You even made the running man look good. I tell you, that's tough!"
Carrie Ann: "That is an old-school classic song, but I liked how you brought a little modern edge to it."
Paula: "Kudos to you... You've got the swagger. It's pretty cool out there."

Scores: 8.5+9+8.5+8.5 = 34.5

Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy
Dancing contemporary

My Comments: I absolutely love the fact that, every time the camera has turned their direction tonight, Kelly and Val have been what can best be called "vertical sex."

The dance pretty much follows that theme. Only with a little more anger. It's actually a passable contemporary-style routine. They have a few problems in staying together on the beats when not together, but it still looks good. Emotions, on the other hand, are perfect in this.

The fact that the two even survived that blouse is an accomplishment.

Judges' Comments
Len: "Of every couple in this season, you are the biggest revelation to me."
Bruno: "Great."
Carrie Ann: "What makes it amazing... Is to be truly in touch with your emotion."
Paula: "You should be proud of yourself."

Scores: 9+9.5+9.5+9.5 = 37.5

And that's it for week for of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars. How crazy was Paula Abdul? Who was the best? Who was the worst? Who will be going home this week?
