Tim Gunn's Guide to Style: Gunn Makes Appearance at Baltimore Book Festival
On Sunday, Tim Gunn put in an appearance at the Baltimore Book Festival. He was in town primarily for a book signing, but he took the time to give the crowd in attendance a lot of helpful tips about making the most of fashion, much as he does for each individual who appears on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style.

His overarching lesson to the fashion-curious seems to be: to thine own self be true.

For one thing, the star of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style told the crowd, everyone's body is unique, and so the clothes you buy off the rack are highly unlikely to fit perfectly. Expect to have to have certain items altered in order to have it look the best on your own figure.

Additionally, learn your style and your body type, and don't be swayed by fashion or fads. An outfit that might look beautiful on one person might be a bad match for someone with a different body type.

And your own style matters too. Gunn reportedly told the crowd about a style update he performed for the Oprah show. The subject worked with horses and spent most of her time in faded work jeans. For the big reveal, the show wanted to put her in a dress. But she seemed to be uncomfortable in every dress they tried, so Tim eventually decided that a sleek and dressy dark denim was dressed up enough for her without forcing her into something that just wasn't a good fit for her personality.

Even those who have encountered many a celebrity before were impressed with how thoughtful and patient Tim was with all the questions, even though the long line of eager fans waiting for his signature was “absolutely insane.” Apparently Tim is as charming in person as he is on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style.
