The track record for school dances on The Vampire Diaries is pretty grim. Someone ends up dead almost every time, and with this week's big mid-season finale at the Homecoming dance, things look even grimmer.

Elena, Damon and the rest of the gang are hatching a plan to lure Klaus back to Mystic Falls to kill him once and for all. But with Stefan's allegiances torn and Mikael and Rebekah serving as wild cards, any plans seem foolish.

In this clip, we see Damon and Elena preparing for battle, though Damon obviously has a few extra twists up his sleeve.

The Homecoming dance will also feature a performance by My Morning Jacket. If this is who the school gets for homecoming, I can't wait to see what they have in store for the senior prom.

Sadly, "Homecoming" will be the last new episode of The Vampire Diaries in 2011. Fans will need to wait until Thursday, January 5 for the show to return. Luckily the CW is helping the Paul Wesley withdrawal. On Thursday, November 18 the network will air Wesley's move Beneath the Blue about dolphin experts who fight back against the U.S. Navy when it's discovered it's responsible for killing the animals. As long as you watch it believing that Wesley's dolphin-loving hero is actually a murderous vampire, it might be fun.

The Vampire Diaries mid-season finale airs Thursday at 8pm on the CW.
