Dear Diary,

There's some crazy stuff going on in The Vampire Diaries. This town, Mystic Falls, seems like an average place where all the "teenagers" are ridiculously hot with outrageously fantastic vocabularies, and they're all somehow connected to each other through various hook-ups and family ties.  In other words, it's just like Dawson's Creek.

But then there's this new kid and he's totally my brand of heroin.  He looks a bit like that Robert Pattinson guy, only with more manageable hair.  His name is Stefan Salvatore, the dreamy and mysterious new kid in town, only he's not a kid, he's a centuries-old vampire!

Yeah diary, I know, vampires are getting out of control, with all this Twilight and True Blood hype, but here's what makes this show different: the evil vampire Damon is Boone from Lost!

So here's the lowdown on the vamps: Stefan is sweet and wants to do good, and he instantly falls in love with this chick named Elena, who reminds him of this girl he used to be in love with a long, long time ago.  But Stefan has a bad boy brother named Damon, and Damon is pure evil.  He kills people and drinks their blood and uses a grey smoke to trap people.  But since he has the ocean-blue eyes of Ian Somerhalder, he's allowed to get away with whatever he wants.

It's not all vampires, though.  Elena has some skeletons of her own, starting with her dead parents.  She took it hard, but got over it by dumping her jock boyfriend Matt.  Elena's younger brother Jeremy, however, decided to go all goth and started dealing drugs and having sex with Matt's little sister Vicki on the DL.  It's kind of awesome that Jeremy is probably the least attractive guy in the cast, and he's still the cutest nerdy goth kid you ever saw.

Elena also has a great support system with her BFF Bonnie, who's also a little psychic, for reals.  Then there's Caroline, but she's a primo beeyotch, mostly putting down other girls and trying to get Stefan for herself, but hands off, girlfriend, because he and Elena are in LOVE!  So instead, she gets picked up by Damon while he's out for some mischief.

Going after Paul Wesley and ending up with Ian Somerhalder?  That's what I call losing the battle but winning the war.  Except for that whole thing about him being a crazy vampire who enjoys attacking and sucking the blood out of girls, like Vicki.

So in the end, Vicki is alive, but barely, Damon is using Caroline to get to Elena, and Elena and Stefan write in their own diaries about how mysterious and tragic their lives are.  They were so made for each other.

Anyway, the sun's coming up soon, so I need to get into my coffin.  Next week on The Vampire Diaries, we'll find out whether watching pretty people brood for an hour is always this interesting.

Until Then,
