We are still right in the thick of things with the current season of
The Real World: Sydney. But preparations are already underway for the next season of the show, which will be set in Hollywood.
For this, the twentieth season of the ground-breaking reality program, the house itself will be a tribute to the 19 seasons that have gone before.
Just in case the gestalt of the whole show didn't already drive home the “living-in-a-fishbowl” concept of living under a camera's constant scrutiny, the house itself makes sure to underline it pretty clearly for the viewer. There is an aquarium with a special feature for the fish: a version of the Hollywood sign. Near the fish tank are 19 video screens playing footage from each of the previous seasons.
The Hollywood theme continues through the house, with a Jaws set in the living and neon hotel sign as décor. There is, of course, the ubiquitous pool (gotta have a place for the young folks to strip down in), house bar and exercise area.
The show's producer, Jonathan Murray, says, “"It has to be a fantasy for the audience.” That's right, this next season of
The Real World will not, apparently, have a lot of pretense of shying away from the entertainment business artifice. The show didn't try to avoid “showbiz wannabes” with this season, instead accepting into
The Real World house a group of young people looking to make it in Hollywood.
Don't think, though, that this means the show is getting ready for its final close-up. Producer Jonathan Murray still thinks there's a bright future for the show, despite its age. "We change the cast every year and the city. MTV has a new group of viewers [growing up with the show]…I think it could go on forever."
