693,082 FIGHTS, 367,301 TEARS, 20 SEASONS, 1 UNFORGETTABLE NIGHT… So goes MTV's official press release for the upcoming broadcast of
The Real World Awards Bash early next month.
Eighty-five cast members encompassing 19 seasons of the groundbreaking MTV reality show,
The Real World, descended upon the Sunset Plaza in Los Angeles on March 15 for the live ceremony of
The Real World Awards Bash: Roast 'Em and Toast 'Em. All the good-natured fun, drama and humor will air April 2nd on MTV from 10-11:30pm.
Hosted by comedian Jeffrey Ross and Susie Castillo,
The Real World Awards gave out recognitions for 13 categories including best meltdown, best fight, hottest male and female and favorite season according to the results of an online vote by fans. In keeping with
The Real World tradition, the awards show features the roommates gossiping about each other in the Confessional and commenting on the winners and losers from each of the categories.
Notwithstanding all the showbiz-style drama, the bash also includes far more solemn and serious moments that bring with them timely and socially relevant messages. There is the tribute for Pedro Zamora, cast member of
The Real World: San Francisco, who succumbed to AIDS the day after that season's finale broadcast. Another alum,
Frankie Abernathy of
The Real World: San Diego, will likewise be remembered posthumously, having lost her battle with cystic fibrosis last year.
According to the network's official press release: “
The Real World Awards Bash also focuses on how the series has influenced pop culture and created a trend in reality programming. Retrospective packages highlight the funniest and most dramatic moments and show how
The Real World has brought attention to socially-important causes, including AIDS, racism, homophobia, addiction, abortion and eating disorders.”
The Real World Awards will also introduce the cast of
The Real World's unprecedented 20th season set in Hollywood, which is due to begin later in April. Previous
Real World destinations were New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii, New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, Paris, San Diego, Philadelphia, Austin, Key West, Denver and Sydney.
