Leslie David Baker as Stanley Hudson
Born on February 19, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois, Leslie David Baker earned a degree in psychology at Loyola University and a degree in human services administration from Spertus College of Judaica. He later moved on to acting, appearing in various television series such as
Malcolm in the Middle,
That '70s Show,
Scrubs and
Line of Fire.
In talking about his transition into acting, Baker said, "Before acting, or acting in survival jobs, I majored in psych. I was an undergrad at Loyola...Worked in three psychiatric hospitals, and then taught school, went back, got a masters in human services. [I was teaching] just briefly while working on my masters and while I was doing extra work and working on commercials because I wanted to pursue acting but I like living indoors and eating on a regular basis and so you know, you gotta have that survival job with benefits. Gotta have insurance. I was doing plays and commercials all along while I had the survival jobs. So then I made the transition in 97."
In 2005, Baker was cast for the role he is most known for, Stanley Hudson in NBC's
The Office.
In talking about his involvement with
The Office, he said, "The agent I had at the time gave me a call and said 'you know they're doing an American version of this British show, The Office. Have you ever seen it?' I said no. So he says 'I want you to go in just for an office worker named Stanley.' I said, 'OK fine.' Went in to Allison Jones, had my little suit and tie because I'm working at an office. And I went in and I read the part and she said 'Great, I want you to go to the callback. It's in two days.' And she said, 'Don't go in as nicely as you're dressed. You wanna look kind of rumpled and kind of wrinkled, like you've been actually working as opposed to...' You try to look nice so I ended up going to the callbacks. I had another audition scheduled that day, drove to the callbacks for The Office, got there, there were like 50 people there and I looked around and said, 'I got time to leave and go to my other audition.'"
When he returned to the callbacks, he auditioned with
Phyllis Smith and two weeks later landed the role of Stanley.
