It seems inevitable, really: Elijah Wood
appearing on the upcoming The Hobbit
. Besides, he’s Frodo Baggins in the three The Lord of the Rings
films, so it would make sense if he appears, right? Then again, the book where the upcoming film is drawn from doesn’t feature Frodo, or most of the other Rings
characters. Then again, the film isn’t just based on the book, but will rather be a much expanded film, taking characters from the rest of J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe, so if things go well, Wood might just show up.
“The secondary film would bridge the gap between The Hobbit
and Lord of the Rings
chronologically, so conceivably, it could be possible,” Wood said. But he wouldn’t be able to tell whether he’ll be in the film, since The Hobbit
is still being written. He only hopes that his character wouldn’t feel more of a handover from The Lord of the Rings
, since Frodo isn’t part of The Hobbit
, after all.
“That’s the thing,” Wood added. “I would imagine that if he does exist, it’ll make some sort of sense Otherwise, I don’t think they would do it. I certainly wouldn’t want to do it. I don’t want to have a whole character piece that doesn’t really exist that they’re cobbling together.”
But he has high hopes that the filmmakers can bring back characters such as his in the right place, and at the right time. “There’s a lot we know historically about the characters where that would make sense,” he said. “And personally, if I was involved, it would be to come on for a tiny little piece and have that be that.”
