The Hills now back on the air, featuring part two of its current third season, star
Lauren Conrad finds herself serving two masters. First off, she is a reality star on the MTV series, which has documented her exploits as part of a privileged young set. Second, Conrad is now also knee-deep in the fashion business, having launched the Lauren Conrad Collection just over a month ago.
The Hills star was in Canada last week, paying a visit to retailer Holt Renfrew, which now carries her maiden Spring 2008 women's wear collection. During that visit, Conrad took time out to speak with
The Canadian Press about multi-tasking on her two projects.
"I would not be able to have the line if I didn't have the reality show first or I wouldn't be able to have it so soon, but because I was on a reality show, you don't get the respect that you want,” Conrad remarked. “I have done everything to deserve it as far as all the designing and everything that I would've done, reality show or not. Because I got the opportunity so much sooner, people are quick to criticize. Being on a reality show and then trying to branch out into designing, it's kind of a double-edged sword."
Nonetheless, despite whatever criticism has been tossed at her, Conrad has shown remarkable single-mindedness in trudging along with her endeavors, particularly in the pursuit of a place in the fashion world. Her Lauren Conrad Collection, over which
The Hills star maintains complete creative control, made it to the runways of Mercedes Benz's L.A. Fashion Week earlier this month.
While she considers that experience “amazing,” Conrad confessed to feeling their stint at the Mercedes Benz event was also harrowing and daunting.
"I actually thought that I had messed up," the MTV reality star admitted. "I was sending looks out and they were kind of untucked and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, it looked terrible,' and I went out and did my wave and walked backstage and I just broke into tears and I was like, 'Oh my God, it was so bad!' I ended up seeing it [later on tape] and I was like, 'OK, it was fine, it was fine."'
The Lauren Conrad Collection is now out in 500 stores and boutiques across the United States, and is exclusively distributed by Holt Renfrew in Canada. As for her reality series, Conrad told
The Canadian Press that she's good to go for a fourth season but is uncertain whether she'd be willing to commit to a fifth. She did, however, said in no uncertain terms, that “No, there's no
Hills movie in the works.”
