It was certainly a day of celebration for gay men and women anywhere in the state, when the California Supreme Court lifted the ban on gay marriage. In its decision, California Chief Justice Ron George reiterated that, “limiting the designation of marriage to a union ‘between a man and a woman’ is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute.”
Actress Ellen DeGeneres is partaking in the fun, as she announces she plans on organizing a “dream wedding” with girlfriend of four years Portia de Rossi. The host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show
made the announcement backstage at the Kodak Theater after winning her fourth consecutive Daytime Emmy for talk show last Friday.
"Yes, we have set a wedding date,” an obviously elated DeGeneres said. “I obviously feel like it's long overdue. I think someday people will look back on this, like women not having the right to vote and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous that we don't all have the same rights."
The news of the decision spread like wildfire among the gay community in California, even prompting reality show poster girl Tila Tequila to claim that she had something to do with the landmark decision. And dozens upon dozens of couples have descended on the clerk’s office to apply for marriage licenses.
The host of The Ellen DeGeneres show
said she plans to fly de Rossi’s family from Australia for the ceremony, where “incredible people” will sing.
"Planning a wedding is very stressful," said DeGeneres. "It's crazy. My gardener is now invited." She adds that part of the wedding ceremony might land on The Ellen DeGeneres Show
DeGeneres first made the announcement on her show more than a month ago, amidst the applause of the studio audience, which at that time includes an understandably speechless de Rossi.
