William Josh Hopkins was born on the 12th of September, 1970 in Lexington, Kentucky to former Congressman Larry Hopkins and his wife, Carolyn. Hopkins early appearance on the big screen was in the film Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999), where he played Paul Allen. He later appeared as Raymond Milbury on the television series Ally McBeal, a show he stayed with for two years. In 2006, Hopkins appeared on the campy television series Pepper Dennis and Brothers & Sisters, where he had a recurring role. He also appeared in Vanished, playing Peter Manning.

Roger Thompson is played by Josh Hopkins in the series Swingtown. Roger is the husband of Janet, and together they are the conservative couple and former neighbors of Susan and Bruce Miller. Susan and Bruce moved to suburban Chicago in the midst of the sexual and social revolution, entering a world completely different than where they came from.
