Who Should Win 'So You Think You Can Dance'?

There is one repeating thought in my brain as we approach the season 7 finale of So You Think You Can Dance this week:

Robert Roldan should be worried.

Don't get me wrong. I love Robert. And clearly all of you SYTYCD voters do, too, since he's made it all the way to the top 3. But there are two reasons he won't be winning this show. Those reasons are Lauren Froderman and Kent Boyd. At this stage in the competition, Robert could sprout wings, soar above the judges panel, and finish on stage with a Tyce Dioro routine that tells the story of someone dying of a terminal illness, and he probably still wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell winning the show.

But to be fair, let's take a look at all three remaining dancers:

Kent Boyd: From the beginning of season 7, Kent stood out for his technical abilities and enthusiasm on stage. His enthusiasm sometimes stood in the way, however. Judges accused him of wearing a broadway face even when he wasn't performing broadway routines. However, this was never enough to send Kent to the Bottom 3. Last week he earned two of the biggest compliments of the season. Guest judge Tyce Dioro announced that, of all the contestants, Kent stood out as the most talented. Add to that Mia Michaels' tears over his contemporary performance with all-star Neil Haskell, and it's easy to see why Kent will probably emerge as this season's winner.

Lauren Froderman:
Unlike Kent, Lauren is not a complete stranger to the Bottom 3. She was "in danger" of elimination two weeks ago along with Billy Bell and Jose Ruiz (emphasis on "in danger" because we all knew she wasn't going anywhere.) Lauren is the last girl standing in this competition, and has been a consistently strong performer whether she's girating in Tahitian feathers or slithering around on stage like a black widow spider. Early in the competition, judges accused her of being too athletic and not emotionally tapping into her routines, but it's clear she's evolved. Last week, following her smoky jazz routine with all-star Ade Obayomi, Adam Shankman declared "I want to hire you!"

Robert Roldan:
Of the three remaining contestants, Robert has spent the most time in the Bottom 3. While the judges often praised his routines and unique style, he didn't seem to be connecting to the voters at home. To his disadvantage, he is frequently stuck doing ballroom style routines which aren't exactly crowd pleasers. Still, his Viennese Waltz with all-star Anya Garnis had guest judge and choreographer Tyce Diorio telling him he "wore the dance like a suit," and Mia Michaels deeming him "the prince of this show." While he may not be America's favorite, there's no denying his ability to transcend multiple genres and bring his own style to whatever he does.

Personally, I'm rooting for Lauren Froderman. She is equal parts athletic and graceful, and she has proven herself to be the most consistently strong dancer of the season. I think Adam Shankman summed her talent up best when, following a broadway routine with Allison Holker, he told her that he no longer considers this a competition for her because she's "already an all-star."
