It's time to find out who is finale bound and who's headed home tonight on
So You Think You Can Dance? Will the
Top 8 elimination curse strike again this year? Will America even have a say in the top 3 girls or will doctor's orders keep Ashleigh DiLello out of the finale in spite of a possible sympathy vote?
You'll have to watch along with me live tonight to find out, but I for one am nervous about tonight's results. Then again, I still haven't picked my jaw up off my keyboard after
last season's shocking Top 8 elimination, hopefully the same fate doesn't await a season 6 favorite. As always, you can follow along with me here or in
140 character quips on Twitter.
Phew, no gold romper from Cat Deeley tonight.Group Routine
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Song: Pon De Floor - Major Lazer remixed by Samantha Ronson
Still only three girls on the dance floor tonight, in what based on the music, choreography, and costuming, I'd venture to guess is a Sonya Tayeh piece. It's not as strong of a piece as the past couple group routines in part because it lacks a clear concept and also they have been pretty phenomenal.Still, Sonya's routine (yes I am that confident it is hers) is quirky, athletic and shows great camaraderie between the remaining girls and guys. Speaking of that, when are we getting our guys and girls group routines of the past seasons? There's been none of them yet. Sadly. And I was right, it was completely a Sonya Tayeh piece, you have to give her credit she has an obvious aesthetic in every realm of a routine.
Results Time:
First up are the four guys, of course, because they don't want to tell us what we all want to know -- what the heck is the deal with Ashleigh DiLello? They still haven't addressed her absence in the opening group routine either.
Russell is up first and I'd be shocked if he was anything but finale bound, even without his partner last night.
Russell: FINALE BOUND (clearly)
Legacy is up next and this could be interesting. He had arguably the strongest and weakest performances of the evening and his solo spent too much time on a schtick and not enough time on his tricks.
Legacy: BOTTOM TWO (whoa. On the other hand that means either Ryan or Jakob is probably going home, I don't see Legacy's legions not calling in for him last night.)
Time to learn the fate of Jakob and Ryan and see if sympathy or technique wins out tonight. Sorry Ryan, but my fingers (and toes) are crossed for technique. (Though of course, Ryan showed tons of beautiful technique in that sizzling cha cha. If he got calls though, I think it's tears and the supportive husband vote.)
JAKOB: FINALE BOUND (wipes sweat off brow - phew)
RYAN: BOTTOM TWO
So I would imagine that means it's the end of Ryan's journey. The question remains, will his wife be leaving with him? And of course, could their be a big upset with Ryan staying over Legacy? Maybe it WASN'T America on the line Legs...
Girls Results
Ashleigh is on stage, without a sling, but what does this mean...she still didn't dance?
First up is Kathryn, which makes me hope she is safe, because girl is becoming a dance sensation before my very eyes.
KATHRYN: FINALE BOUND (hooray for technique triumphing tonight!)
But now they are talking to Ellenore, which by my deduction and my keen knowledge of SYTYCD patterns, means Ellenore is in the bottom two. This gives me a massive case of the sads.
ELLENORE: BOTTOM TWO (not pleased with that, but banking on Travis Wall's previous 100% safety rating.)
So that means it's between Mollee (our sweet Tween) and Ashleigh for the final spot.
MOLLEE: BOTTOM TWOASHLEIGH: FINALE BOUNDInteresting. Shockingly so. That means that either Mollee or Ellenore is headed home, which is a fricking shame. No, I'm not a huge Mollee fan but last night was her best night and she danced. And, um, Ashleigh didn't dance. Of course it was doctors' order, but Ashleigh was the only girl remaining who really NEEDED last night to really prove her spot in the finale. That's not to say she couldn't or wouldn't have made it through on her performances, I actually think she would have killed it last night...but getting in on the finale on an injury and sympathy votes, it just doesn't sit well with me or by the looks of his shocked face, Adam Shankman. And if I were Ashleigh, it wouldn't sit well with me either. She's a fierce competitor and I'm sure she wished she could have fought for it herself.
Cat I don't want exciting news about season 7. I seriously need a
So You Think You Can Dance break. I think we are ALL suffering from
So You Think You Can Dance fatigue.
Legacy's SoloLegacy's not going for the schtick tonight in his solo, instead performing one insane move after another with no transition...just move to seamless move. Gravityless, skeletonless, and dancing for his life...where was that last night?
Ellenore's SoloEllenore's solo is a combination of ballet, contemporary moves, and her brand of quirk. She danced much harder than last evening and didn't seem to be favoring her shoulder tonight. It's a shame she and Legacy couldn't have given this solos last night. By far Ellenore's best solo since her audition, it used her quirky movement, without relying on her quirky personality.
Ryan's SoloUnlike Legacy and Ellenore Ryan does his same solo as last night. And, is it just me or is Ryan not as good at the acrobatic power moves as he thinks he is? Every time he does that back layout I'm afraid he's going to hit his He-Man head. Thankfully, he didn't. After Ade, I think most fellas acrobatics could look weak.
Mollee's SoloMollee is using the electronic ticks and quirks of the Santagold song to accentuate her musicality and movement. Another great solo, though she threw in the kitchen sink with acrobatics.
And now it's time for Kris Allen, who may have won American Idol, but it's Adam Lambert who gets to perform in the finale. We always knew who FOX wanted to win last season...this is just another reminder, but you have to feel a little bad for Kris. I do.
It's results time and for the first time all season my heart is actually pounding.
ELLENORE IS FINALE BOUND
MOLLEE IS ELIMINATED
Man, I feel awful for Mollee she danced her best ever last night and it wasn't enough to conquer the potent sympathy vote. Ellenore can't believe it asking "wait, wait, am I in the finale or is Mollee?" She wasn't my favorite all season, but I think that she earned a spot in the finale last night.
RYAN IS FINALE BOUND
LEGACY IS ELIMINATED
Whoa. Talk about the top 8 curse striking again and hard. Congrats, the marrieds will dance together. But wowza...that's the shocker of the season. A Janette Manrara sized shocker in fact. Again, Legacy hasn't always been my favorite but he really proved himself and won me over each week with his performances. And seriously America, you want to see a Ryan DiLello solo more than a Legacy solo on next week's finale? Maybe Ryan can do the Kevin Bacon
Footloose barn solo. (Sorry, low blow, but I did see Footloose this weekend and during that scene all I could think of was Ryan DiLello's solos.)
Ultimately if I thought people were voting for Ryan's cha cha last night or Ashleigh's tremendous growth, I wouldn't have a bad taste in my mouth...but I don't think that's what happened. So the lesson tonight America? Never EVER discount the sympathy vote and tears of a hunky husband.
