After two (fast!) weeks of auditions and last week's introduction to the Top 11 and the All-Stars, the competition will really begin. This week on
So You Think You Can Dance, the random hat will come back, the choreographers will get busy again and the phone lines will open as the first week of proper competition begins.
First, a review of what will happen: The finalists no longer pick a genre out of the hat, but instead will pick an All-Star, and they will dance to that All-Star's style. Only one person goes home every week instead of two. And, in a move that I haven't read about since it was first announced,
the judges will choose who to eliminate all the way through to the finale -- although we get to pick who the bottom three are, of course.
Now, to the spoilers for this week's performance show, which come from
the folks over at SYTYCDism. They note that since performance shows will be taped early on Wednesday rather than on Tuesday like previous seasons, these spoilers will be less detailed (which explains why some are merely marked "ballroom"). Still, this week's list gives us a pretty good idea what to expect on Wednesday night.
As always, these details can change at any time, and I've also thrown in my thoughts. To the list, then -- and this goes without saying:
there are spoilers after the cut!Adechike Torbert and Kathryn McCormick: contemporary/jazz (Travis Wall)While we haven't seen much of Adechike, he has a spark we saw during the Vegas callbacks that I'd like to see in this routine. It could happen this week, with a Travis Wall routine and strong support from Kathryn.
Alex Wong and Allison Holker: jazz (Sonya Tayeh)Sonya routines are always memorable, but can the ballet star really get into her freaky jazz head? This is a good early test to see how far outside his comfort zone Alex can stretch.
Ashley Galvan and Neil Haskell: contemporary (Tyce Diorio)John thinks Ashley could make it far because of her experience dancing for TV shows -- and that theory gets put to the test this week. I don't have a reason to think she'll fail this one, though.
Alexie Agdeppa and Twitch Boss: hip-hop (Tabitha and Napoleon)I'm a little anxious about whether Alexie can pull this off. Based from all that I've seen and read about her, hip-hop isn't exactly her strong suit -- and having Twitch as a partner could complicate things.
Billy Bell and Lauren Gottlieb: broadway (Tyce Diorio)Finally, Billy's first
SYTYCD performance
in competition. I'll keep a close watch on this one. But as we all know, Billy can do no wrong.
Cristina Santana and Mark Kanemura: jazz (Sonya Tayeh)Since she's the only ballroom dancer on
SYTYCD this season, I'm a little anxious as to whether Cristina can pull this off. In theory, salsa dancers could -- but, as we saw with the Di Lellos last season, it's going to be an uphill climb.
Jose Ruiz and Comfort Fedoke: hip-hop (Tabitha and Napoleon)Three words: Lucky Full Deck.
Kent Boyd and Anya Garnis: ballroom (Tony Meredith/Melanie LaPatin) (TBD)I know that Kent has done well in the auditions and the Vegas callbacks, but I feel like I haven't seen much of him apart from his infectious personality and his dreams of dating someone like Beyonce. I don't think the
SYTYCD stage will swallow him up, but he's got a lot to prove in my book.
Lauren Froderman and Ade Obayomi: contemporary (Mandy Moore)On paper this could be one of the best routines of the week: Lauren's been fascinating so far, and combined with excellent support from Ade, this could be a routine to remember.
Melinda Sullivan and Pasha Kovalev: ballroom (Tony Meredith/Melanie LaPatin) (TBD)For a tap dancer, Melinda's been surprising in her ability to take on other styles. Depending on what ballroom style this is (remember, no detailed spoilers this season) this could make or break her chances.
Robert Roldan and Courtney Galiano: possibly African jazz (Sean Cheesman)I'll call this performance the ultimate wild card. We haven't seen a lot of Afro-jazz routines on the show (I remember Russell's routine last season though) and since I still know Robert as "that guy beside Billy," I'll withhold judgment.
