Will Smallville be The Next to Announce an End Date?

Michael Rosenbaum - SmallvilleLost has announced its end date, Battlestar Galactica has followed suit, could it be time for Smallville to make a similar announcement?   Long time fans have languished since Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum announced he will be leaving, the main concern is how to fill that Lex Luthor shaped hole in Smallville's plot.  While the show seems to be closing in on a fresh addition to the mythology to replace Luthor, Bizarre Clark, another possibility would be to close the book on the Smallville centric series altogether.  But how would they do it?

Smallville has flirted quite close to the comic book mythology on many occasions without drifting too far from its original take on the material.  One event that seems to be Smallville’s Kryptonite is a certain article of clothing that has yet to make its appearance.  Hint, it’s form fitting and comes in Blue.

It has long been said that we will not see Clark don the tights of Superman on Smallville because once he crosses that line, the show changes forever.  You can’t just don the tights once and a while.  Once Clarke becomes Superman, he’s superman for life, and Clark Kent is his part time persona.

It seems natural then, that the end of the series would be just that; Clark taking his position as a superhero, pledging his like to truth and justice, and casting himself into the urban jungle of Metropolis to subdue muggers, rescue cats from trees, and battle the occasional super villain.

With the progression of Lex’s character, it's possible that Clarke will have his own departure will be a similar epiphany.  This season in particular saw Lex travel well beyond the irrevocable point and deep into the territories of the mad genius he is destined to become.  Could it be that the same event that will cast him underground to become the criminal mastermind we know so well also prompt Clark to find his true destiny?

With televisions shows announcing their end point suddenly being en vogue, it would not be surprising to hear that Smallville will be leaving the air.  The question is,  whether it leaves now or later will it leave with a flash of blue and red?
