...and put it in your pocket, never let it fade away--only envision the shooting star as rising ratings.

Admittedly, climbing ratings on The CW are relative. If NCIS just crested Mount Everest and Ghost Whisperer reached the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro, then Smallville might scale the Appalachian range. Nonetheless, the fact remains that ratings are on the rise.

Despite the Friday night timeslot of death, The CW's veteran series proved its metal this week, winning the hour among adults and men 18-34, and persons and males 12-34. Smallville ultimately earned a total of 2.63 million viewers, scoring a new season high and producing the best performance seen by the series since last September--over one year ago.

I believe I speak for Smallville fans across the country and around the world when I shout: Yahoo! Yippee! Huzzah! Hip Hip Hooray! (Feel free to insert your cheer of choice.)

The reason for the climb? Perhaps word of mouth spread just far enough. Perhaps prodigal fans returned, bolstered by the hopeful news regarding a tenth season. Perhaps the legions of Clois fans gathered en masse, encouraged by one epic kiss. Perhaps none of the above and all of the above. Who knows?

What matters now is that fans build on this momentum and continue watching, continue spreading the word. The powers that be obviously look favorably on improved ratings--particularly during November sweeps--but they also keep their eyes peeled for flukes. Only three new episodes remain before the mid-season hiatus, so let's show Smallville some love and prove those ratings are here to stay.

Leave a comment, what do you think we could do to spread the word on Smallville?
