So much for that fairytale marriage. After five years of furniture jumping and tabloid-friendly romance, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce.

TMZ.com released a statement from Katie Holmes' attorney on Friday, June 29. "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," attorney Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

The Cruise-Holmes relationship has pretty much never left the tabloids ever since it began. From Katie Holmes' comments about Tom Cruise being her childhood crush (an understandable but still kind of creepy thing) to Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey's sofa in order to express his love, there really has been a lot of tabloid fodder from these two.

Even their wedding ceremony was the stuff of legend -- Cruise and Holmes tied the knot in 2006 in a ceremony held at an Italian castle. Speculation on the nature of the wedding (it was a Scientology ceremony) and gossip about all of the Hollywood stars on the guest list were all the paparazzi and late-night comedians needed for a dream event.

Recently, however, attention has turned to Tom Cruise's reviving film career and to photos of the couple's 6-year-old daughter, Suri. Other than idle gossip (usually concerning the idea that Katie Holmes is some sort of prisoner to her husband's whims or some such nonsense), very little has been said about the couple of late. Cruise and Holmes haven't even been seen together in public since February 2012.

That in itself may be a sign of the problems that led to this divorce.

While there are no confirmed reports of divorce papers being filed, the two actors have been spotted in rather distant locations from each other. While Katie Holmes (with Suri) has lately been seen in the New York City area, Tom Cruise is on location in Iceland for an upcoming film, Oblivion.

One has to wonder if this separation will be a help to Katie Holmes if she wants to restart her acting career. The former Dawson's Creek star has not worked much since her marriage, and remember that Nicole Kidman (married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001) only started to get those hit movies and Oscar nominations after her own divorce.

There is no way we won't be hearing more about this anyway. Good luck hearing about anything else, actually.
