Reaper: Episode 1.4, "Magic" Recap

Reaper keeps on keepin' on.  I've thoroughly enjoyed every episode so far, and tonight was no exception.  Ray Wise got to stretch his legs as The Devil tonight, actually playing a major part in the action, unlike previous episodes.  My biggest complaint with Reaper is that the Andi/Sam relationship keeps spinning its wheels.  How long can they really keep these two apart?  The problem is that they came into the show as best friends.  There was already sexual tension.  The relationship can't grow anymore in its current form.  The will they/won't they route just isn't going to work much longer.  They either need to hook up or one of them has to find a significant other.  End of story.  But, anyways, who feels like a recap?

Sam is about to jump in his car and head to work when the keys disappear from his hands.  He has to take a cab and when it drops him off at the Work Bench, his cash also disappears.  So does his wallet.  Sam's keys appear later in Ben's pocket.  His wallet shows up in a can of paint.  Devil powers are at work.  Later, he has a realistic fantasy that a customer stabs him in the stomach. The Devil is messing with him.  The vessel appears in the back room at the Work Bench.  Sam, Ben and Sock are about to open it, but the box starts moving.  There's something inside.  They don't open it.

Andi asks Sam if he'll join her at a Flaming Lips concert at the University of Idaho (which is ridiculous, by the way - I live in Seattle and no one has ever gone to the University of Idaho for anything, there are more than enough concert venues in and around the city).  He says yes, and everyone - Sock, Ben, and Josie - will be going.  Ted calls everyone in for a paint rodeo that occurred earlier in the day.  He forbids everyone from speaking to each other while at work.

The Devil transports Sam to the scene of a car accident.  An escaped soul is at fault.  Bellifiore is the name of the soul.  Sam gets mad when that's all the info he's given and because he's not going to be allowed to go to the Flaming Lips concert because he has to catch the soul.  The Devil asserts his authority by almost getting Sam hit by two semi trucks.

Sam, Ben and Sock, wielding weapons, open the vessel.  Inside is a dove in a cage.  Sam starts looking up Bellifiore.  He gets the idea to google "Bellifiore disappear" and he finds out that Enrico Bellifiore was a magician from early in the 20th century.  Andi tells Sam that she could only get two tickets and it's just going to be the two of them.  Sam can't bring himself to tell her that he can't go.  After seeing apples everywhere, Sam gets the idea to head to the Seattle Apple Festival.  There they find who they think is Bellifiore.  He does a little routine with a big ol' sword.  He gets mad at the audience for not being more impressed with his magic.  He calls a man on stage to perform a trick.  He stabs the guy straight in the chest with his sword.  The guy, though, is fine.  Bellifiore disappears from the festival.  As they leave, Sam, Ben and Sock find the man from the trick being taken away in the ambulance.  He had a bunch of internal injuries.

Sam, Sock and Ben hit up the bar and discuss Bellifiore.  He plays a show at noon on the next day, and they'll have to take off work to go see it.  At Ben's urging, the next day Sam asks his mom to see the contract his parents signed with the Devil.  I guess they're seeing if it has any loopholes.  They have a difficult time finding the contract.  They finally do, but the contract fell apart.  It's dust.  Sam's car disappears as he's about to leave for work.

The Devil shows up on the side of the road.  Sam asks to see the contract, but the Devil assures him that he has no rights.  Sam complains some and wants some incentive.  The Devil, clearly pissed, decides that he can give him some proper incentive.  The Devil shows up at the Work Bench and beelines to Andi.

Sam shows up at work and finds his car parked across four handicapped spots.  Sam and Sock find out that the Devil gave Andi a free ticket to the magic show.  Sam, in a panic, tells Ted that he'll take the next four weekend shifts plus Thanksgiving if he can get off to go to the magic show.  Meanwhile, the dove got away and Sock and Ben have to catch it.

Sam arrives at the magic show and finds Andi in the front row.  She says that she got his voice mail to meet her there - he didn't send one.  He tries to get her to leave with him, but Bellifiore calls Sam on stage.  He tries to leave with Andi, but it's too late.  Andi thinks Sam is just being scared, so she offers to go p on stage, but Sam stops her and walks on stage himself.

Sam inspects the sword to see if it's real.  He then runs off stage.  Bellifiore follows him and Sam realizes that his power is in the sword.  They two speak briefly, and Sam tells him he's sending him back to hell, just as soon as his friends show up.  Bellifiore chases after Sam for awhile, almost impaling him a number of times.  Ben and Sock show up just in time and hand him the dove and the cage.  Sam figures out that he has to do a magic trick, so he places a sheet over the cage and makes the dove disappear.  The dove comes back as a massive bird of prey and sucks up Bellifiore's soul.

Andi is pissed and Sam for taking those weekend shifts so he can't go on his trip with Andi.  Drowning his sorrows alone back at the bar, the Devil shows up.  They discuss Sam's woes and the Devil finally agrees to show Sam the contract.  The Devil also tells Sam that Andi is clearly into him.
