Prison Break - 2.22 Sona Recap
Monday, April 02, 2007
Sona is easily the most anticipated Prison Break of the season, not so much because of the few loose ends it ties up - in ingeniously twisted ways I might add - but for the fact that everybody was expecting the setup for season three. Did it deliver? Did Prison Break work the same magic with its second season finale as it did its first? From this writers perspective, absolutely, on the money, yes, yes, yes. One thing you should expect from Prison Break is that things aren't going to end up quite as you expect them no matter how predictable it seems, but there were twists in this episode that were literally months in the making, and even if you expected the unexpected, I doubt many of you were prepared for what happened tonight.
The bulk of the action is what you expect. The showdowns take place, but there are twists galore. Kellerman 'unexpectedly' rescues Sarah from her trial, so she does wind up heading south of the border with Michael. Mahone does live. Bellick and Sucre are captured by the authorities, as is T-Bag. Now here is where things get totally crazy.
First, Agent Kim, remember him? Dead. Sarah kills him, and now she is wanted, again, but after professing his love for her, Michael takes the blame so she can walk free. Lincoln is desperately trying to find Michael in Panama and finds out that Sarah has given a statement and seemingly turned on Michael. For now Linc is keeping his distance.
The curious things are in the wave of new characters that show up. We find out that T-Bag has been working with a mysterious dude to lure everybody south of the border. Why? In the lawless badlands of Mexico, a government sponsored hit squad could have easily taken everybody out. But they didn't. We get precious few details from this scene.
In a bizarre twist of fate, Mahone and Michael wind up in the same prison, Sona. Scariest place on TV ever. This is a prison so scary, the guards stay on the outside. There are junkies, hookers, and thugs lining the graffiti embellished hall that leads to the bright light of the yard. Michael walks cautiously, breaking every rule of prison by make eye contact with every freak on the walk down.
The end of the episode is perplexing to say the least. This is where Prison Break meets LOST. We flash to a couple of men in lab coats at what looks to be some sort of research facility or hospital. A man approaches someone he refers to as the General. He tells him that Michael is in prison, the General seems pleased with this, then he says that Michael will no doubt escape. The General squints incredulously at his inept henchman. Of course he will, he says, it is in his blood.
Okay, secret conspiracies, allusions of genetic tampering, lab coats. WTF? Best Prison Break finale EVER!
