Clogged Cable Summer Schedule Forces New Marketing Tactics

As cable networks are poised to bring back shows and introduce new ones this coming summer season, much traffic can be expected on the small screen. Competition is also tight, with a number of shows being reshuffled and pitted against one another, all trying to capture a significant viewer count.

Because of the clogged scheduling, the networks have come up with different marketing strategies in order to entice the audience to tune in to their respective shows. In an effort to promote the comedy series, My Boys, TBS is sending out “Wing Man Vans” to various bar-heavy places. The promotion will provide the free service of a “wing man,” a person intended to help his friend pick up a woman.

My Boys, which first aired on November 28, 2006, features a cast of fresh and familiar faces alike. Jordana Spiro plays P.J. Franklin, a young sportswriter who struggles to find love while surrounded by a group of male friends. The show has Spiro in her first leading role, with more recognizable faces like Jim Gaffigan and Kyle Howard as part of the supporting cast. Gaffigan, who is known for his unique comic stylings and animated series, Pale Force, plays Andy Franklin, P.J.’s brother. Howard, who has appeared in several television and film productions like House Arrest, Orange County and CSI, portrays Bobby Newman, P.J’s former love interest and current work rival.

Other cast members include Reid Scott, Jamie Kaler (Will and Grace), Michael Bunin and Kellee Stewart.

In following the conflict of the show, the characters have often used and referenced match.com. The dating site is actually one of the sitcom’s sponsors.

Although My Boys spent its first season on the Tuesday primetime slot on TBS, it has been set to compete from the Monday night schedule beginning this August. The new time will pit the sitcom against TNT’s medical drama, Heartland. Turner is the parent company of both TBS and TNT, consequently giving way to some inside competition.
