When the idea a struggling female artist with a sidekick job on the side finally materialized via
The Middleman, it seemed like a good idea. After it debuted on the ABC Family last July 16, the reviews were mixed. Some described it as ‘loaded with clever banter – like Men in Black if Will Smith's character was a geeky girl,' while others praised its ‘colorful sets and rapid-fire screwball dialogue,' that will make you ‘want to watch it repeatedly.' On the other hand, others criticized its unintentionally being campy, with its cheesy effects, poor performances, and subpar execution of potentially good ideas.
In an interview with Fanbolt,
The Middleman's main star
Natalie Morales, who plays Wendy Watson, revealed what she thought on the idea that
The Middleman, although it may be too early to tell, may just evolve into a cult hit.
“The other day someone asked me what Wendy Watson would be like when she was 30 and I was like, "Whoa!, that's so scary!" she shares. “I don't know. I have given thoughts on the fact that I might be doing this for a while, which really doesn't bother me in any way. It's the kind of show that's really doesn't stay the same at all. There's no formula to this show, not really and we can do whatever we want.”
Morales, moreover, admits that she enjoys playing the enigmatic lead because of the comedic range she's allowed to get.
“I get to deliver lines in a crazy fashion if I feel like it. I love doing that. I love the fact that she's sort of the comedic relief of the show in a way, even though Ida pretty much steals the show. She's very funny.”
Finally, she says that ‘a few more layers of Wendy' will be revealed as this season progresses, as there are a lot of sides to her, from the sarcastic, cynical side to the sweet side. Who knows, she quips, there might even be a lovey-dovey aspect to her geeky personality.
