The nominations for the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday morning, and as always, it's a mix of old favorites and wacky new entries. Sure shows like Homeland, Downton Abbey and Modern Family got multiple nominations, but so did ABC's Nashville. And somehow NBC's Smash got nominated for Best Comedy/Musical Series.

The Golden Globes are often eager to embrace new shows, and that they did. On the drama side, Nashville proved a big hit for ABC picking up nominations for stars Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere. One of the more unexpected nominations came for Danny Huston from the Starz series Magic City, which you probably didn't watch. The majority of the categories, however, were as expected, with Homeland, Breaking Bad and Downton Abbey. Interestingly, Mad Men was left off the list of best dramas. Also the total lack of Game of Thrones is mind-boggling.

On the comedy side, Veep and Girls did well as expected, and the Golden Globes' love affair with the little-watched Showtime comedy Episodes continued. In a very surprising nomination, NBC's maligned Smash was recognized in the Comedy/Musical category, meaning it will compete against shows like Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

And in the increasingly confusing American Horror Story category saga, Jessica Lange was nominated in the Miniseries/TV Movie category one day after the SAG Awards nominated her for Drama Series.

Oddly enough that's the only nomination for any of Ryan Murphy's three shows. The Golden Globes have been very generous to him in the past, but Glee and The New Normal were both snubbed in all Comedy categories.

On the film side, as expected, Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty dominated with Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained getting lots of love after being snubbed by the SAG Awards.

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air Sunday, January 13 on NBC hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
