If your father plays an enigmatic, obnoxious, brilliant doctor bordering on mental instability, how would this affect you? The star of Fox's top-rating medical drama House says he is slightly concerned that his "fame" and role may screw up his kids. Hugh Laurie, 49, has three children with wife Jo - Charlie, 20; Bill, 18; and Rebecca, 15. The kids live with their mom in the UK, whereas Laurie spends of his time in Los Angeles where House is shot.
"It's a very difficult thing. I constantly marvel at how grown-up my children are, how grown-up they're being about this."
Laurie adds that he makes it a point to call his kids everyday before heading to the House set.
"I worry about parenting at this sort of distance, but they are being so generous and so cool about it that - I mean, it might be because they're English, and they won't reveal their psychological damage until they're in their late forties."
For his part, the British actor says he didn't expect House to last this long, and five seasons hence, he is still "superstitious" about the show's success. "I'm just convinced that the day we put down a deposit on a house is the day that we get cancelled. It's just inevitable. In fact, the first season I was in a hotel for the first three months because I was so convinced that we were going to be gone. I didn't even unpack. I had a half-empty suitcase. I thought it was going to be any day now... I have an apartment now and they visit and I go back when I can. If we get Thanksgiving off in November, I got four days to go back. I go when I can. There's just a lot of flying."
Laurie sums up by saying that his main goal is "just to try and not embarrass them."
