This could not have come at a worse time for Christian Bale. Or maybe it's the opposite. It is being reported that Christian Bale was brought into Scotland Yard on charges of assault. Earlier today, it was reported that Bale was arrested, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Weirdly enough, Bale's mother and sister were the ones who brought the charges of assault, based upon an incident that occurred on Sunday in a London hotel. The charges, if there ever were any, were held off until today, so as not to interfere with
The Dark Knight's London premiere, which was last night, Monday the 21st. According to a statement issued by Bale's law firm, the actor turned himself in to police earlier today, fully cooperated during a few hours of questioning and was subsequently released from Scotland Yard without any charges being filed. More details should emerge soon.
The tricky part of this story is the charge of assault. In England, verbal assault is a crime, and that looks to be exactly what Bale has been charged with. Not physical. One report says the incident was a result of a long-standing family argument. If you take a look into Bale's family history and past, it's not impossible to see why this strife may have occurred.
Bale's history is quite interesting. His father was a talent agent/commercial pilot and his mother was a circus performer. He began acting at the age of 8, and his father, David Bale, was very supportive of Bale's young career and traveled around with Christian for much of his early career. Bale's parents divorced at some point along the way. In 2000, David Bale married notable feminist Gloria Steinem. Three years later, David died from brain lymphoma at the age of 62.
I remember reading that Christian was quite close to his father and, as things tend to go after divorces, kids can gravitate towards one parent over another. Perhaps this conflict has continued through the years, even after David Bale's death. It's impossible to know the machinations of any family, and we should all hope that Bale's family's issues get resolved as soon as possible.
