In a piece of news sure to be shocking to those who think Hollywood marriages end in nothing but happily-ever-afters, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have decided to separate after seven years of marriage.

The couple released a joint statement to People on Friday to announce the divorce:

We have decided to end our marriage. This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved, and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time.

The combined statement and professions of amicability will no doubt be ignored by most tabloids, considering the prominent status of both divorcees. Privacy is equally unlikely.

This marks the third divorce for Jennifer Lopez (who was previously married to Ojani Noa and Cris Judd -- not to mention her almost-marriage to Ben Affleck) and the second divorce for Marc Anthony (formerly married to Dayanara Torres). The couple first got together early in 2004 and were married quietly in June of that year. They have two children, twins born in 2008. There is no word as to any sort of custody arrangement for the children.

The divorce comes at a time when both spouses are having prominent and successful moments in their careers. Lopez recently finished her first season as an American Idol judge and serves as a reality-TV producer. Marc Anthony, meanwhile has had his guest-starring appearance as Detective Nick Renata on HawthoRNe upgraded to a regular role for the TNT drama's third season. Both Lopez and Anthony rose to prominence initially in the music industry, despite their more recent prominence on television.

Did the Lopez-Anthony divorce come as a surprise to you? Did you think there were public warning signs that this was coming, or did they manage to keep things quiet? What are your theories as to why the divorce occurred? Feel free to gossip and theorize in the comments below!
