The impending nuptials between Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) might as well be called the wedding of the century. Within the first 24 hours of launching of the Grey's Anatomy couple's wedding website, which is hosted by real-life wedding hub TheKnot.com and apparently managed by wedding planner extraordinaire, Izzie (Katherine Heigl), an invitation to RSVP for the event drew some 1,400 replies and 42,000 unique visitors. That's quite impressive for a fictional TV couple.
According to Grey's Anatomy series creator Shonda Rhimes, the idea of website came as the show filmed its April 23 episode, in which Izzie snapped photos of her friend's begrudgingly test-driving dresses. Aiming for a memorable ceremony with all the genuine touches of a real wedding, Rhimes consulted her sister, who happens to be a wedding planner, and asked for something that would "feel like a real wedding web site." Thus, making fans excited for what is deemed to be "the most magical, romantic, breath-taking wedding you've ever seen."
Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.
Aside from the guest book, in which other Seattle Grace doctors already have signed, the site includes posts about Meredith and Derek, from how they met to how he proposed at the hospital elevator. There are also links to dress photos and other wedding details, which will be updated as we draw closer to the big day.
While the characters and all the other wedding details are only fictional, the gift registry is very real. In fact, it urges fans to donate to any of three medical research causes (American Academy of Neurology Foundation, American Skin Association, and Alzheimer's Association) that are pegged to Grey's Anatomy
May 14 marks Mer-Der's wedding but a twist in this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy
will reportedly move up the date, making the May 7 episode of the medical drama the one to mark on your calendar. And while there's a big possibility that Meredith and Derek won't walk down the aisle, Rhimes reassures fans that they won't be disappointed.
"I've seen the wedding and it's quite beautiful," Rhimes teased. "I've said this time and again -- you may be surprised at the way we bring it off but at the end of the season, viewers will be very happy with where Meredith and Derek are."
