'Grey's Anatomy' Fan Columnist: Igniting a McFirestorm
'Grey's Anatomy' Fan Columnist: Igniting a McFirestorm
So I've gotta say that I really didn't see that one coming.  My poll question at the end of last week's column on episode 6.17, "Push" ('This Week's Theme is Moving On') has ignited a firestorm of controversy over Mark Sloan and his romantic future.  Both the poll results and the impassioned comments indicate highly diverse and divided opinions on what should come next for our McSteamy.

Team Lexie

Little Grey has 50% of the support in the poll thus far and many comments supporting a reunion between Mark and Lexie.  Is this within the realm of possibility?  It's hard to say.  They seemed to genuinely care for each other, but there is a big difference in their ages and they appear to be at very different stages of their lives.  Still, Lexie was clearly devastated when she discovered that Mark was moving on without her.  Does Mark still harbor feelings in return?  Or has that ship sailed?

Team Teddy

Roughly a quarter of the poll respondants (27 % as I type) are in favor of Mark pursuing a relationship with newcomer, Teddy Altman.  They shared some pretty cute scenes in the last episode and, as Callie noted, Teddy is "age-appropriate" for Mark and likely wants the same things (marriage, kids, family, whatever).  I'm curious to see how all of this will play out.  Is their fairly strong showing in the poll and comments due to a genuine interest in this couple?  Or are other variables in play?  Some of the vote undoubtedly came from passionate Owen and Cristina fans who want Teddy as far away from Owen as possible.  Other votes probably stemmed from those who never really saw the love connection between Mark and Lexie and want to see Mark go in a new direction.  Regardless (SPOILER ALERT), by all accounts, Mark and Teddy will be exploring their relationship further in the next episode.

Team Addison

Despite another "near miss" (in the recent Private Practice crossover), Mark and Addie will always have a strong connection to each other and their fan base remains faithfully committed to "Maddison".  They also have about a quarter of the vote (23% currently) and their devoted fans keep holding out hope that someday they will be together.  Given that they are on two different shows, I'm not sure how likely that is, but I respect devoted shippers who keep the faith even when things are looking grim for their couple.   Who knows what the future holds?

Team Callie

Now before you start throwing rocks at me, let me tell you why I'm including Callie on this list.  After reading the column last week, a Grey's-loving friend of mine let me know that she wishes I'd included a fourth option in the poll:  "d.  Callie" (!) She maintains that she's still hoping that they will get together.  And once I recovered from the shock, I started poking around a bit on the Internet and discovered that she's far from alone in her opinion.  Apparently many fans are still crossing their fingers for Mark and Callie.  I know, I know.  Mark and Callie weren't ever really a couple in the first place.  They were Friends With Benefits who eventually become BFFs Without Benefits.  I know, I know.  Callie has switched teams and is now really happily in love with Arizona Robbins.  I know, I know.  By even suggesting a Mark/Callie pairing, the Calzona fan base is going to be up in arms.  Having said that, one could argue that Mark and Callie care about each other deeply, want the same things (in particular, children, and that seems to be a new bone of contention for Callie and Arizona), have tremendous chemistry (so far platonic, but potentially romantic) and they are absolutely comedic GOLD together.  To me, they are both heart-warming and hilarious.  Who knows if anything will come of this?  But it's fun to speculate.

Another Poll

So here you go.  It's another poll reflecting the inclusion of Callie.  Vote your passion and then sound-off in the comments!  Just keep your rocks to yourself, please.
