Gossip Girl: Episode 2.13 "O Brother, Where Bart Thou?" Recap (Page 1/3)
Spotted: Lily (Kelly Rutherford) has decided to leave Bart because he's got a private investigator keeping tabs on her misdeeds, as well as the rest of her brood. Meanwhile, Chuck tattles on her whereabouts to daddy dearest. But right before anything scandalous happens, Lily gets the call that Bart's been in an accident.

Tonight's Gossip Girl begins with everyone making preparations for Bart Bass' funeral. They wrote him off the show mighty quickly, didn't they? With not even a last huzzah. Will we ever find out the secret he dug up about Lily's institutionalized past?

CeCe is back, yay! She is back to make her grandchildren eat breakfast. Meanwhile, Lily is going nuts making lists and canceling tuna towers for the big funeral. Everyone mourns in their own way, she says.

Chuck (Ed Westwick) is laying low in his hotel suite, in communicado from the rest of the world, including Lily and Blair. Blair (Leighton Meester) is continually annoyed by Cyrus and Eleanor's wedding planning.

Dan (Penn Badgley) stops by to check in on Serena, who is worried about everyone else. She thanks him for being so stable. Not to be outdone, the punily mustachioed Boron also stops by to offer his own support. Serena (Blake Lively)cuts the tension by telling them both that she wants to go to the funeral with just her family.

Rufus (Matthew Settle) and Lily take a stroll through Central Park, where the foliage is still beautiful, even in December. They do live in a magical Manhattan, don't they? Lily has a voicemail message that he sent on his way to meeting her that she still hasn't listened do yet. She admits that she feels tremendous guilt because she was planning to end her marriage right before Bart died. Rufus promises that this time, and he'll wait for her, for as long as it takes. CeCe, who has followed Lily to the park, witnesses their whole conversation. Alone, Lily listens to the voicemail, and in it, Bart tells her that he knows that she's going back to Rufus and he knows the reason why she was institutionalized all those years ago. Uh oh, looks like Lily's well-kept secret will soon be making headlines.

Chuck, meanwhile, meets with Bart's private investigator and tries to wheedle out of him what he found out about Lily. The PI isn't sharing yet, though. He's certain that Lily will be more than interested in this bit of juicy gossip, and he's holding out for the highest bidder.

At the funeral, Dan and Boron anxiously wait for Serena on the steps of the church. They lamely try to one-up each other regarding Serena's text messages. Jenny (Taylor Momsen), with her coke-whore mullet in check, shows up to support her BFF Eric (Eric Paolo), but he is sad that his super-cute boyfriend is not there. CeCe tsk-tsks to Lily about her mid-day rendezvous with Rufus at the park. Meanwhile, Chuck is three sheets to the wind, not in a good way, and late to the funeral. Blair and Nate (Chace Crawford) are helping him walk so that he can pay his respects to his late father. Lily thanks Dan for being there, but Chuck, who has just arrived, lashes out at him, demanding to know why he is here. He puts the blame for Bart's death on the patriarch of the Humphrey clan. CeCe steps in to ask Dan to leave, but Serena tries to insist that he stay. Lily tells Chuck that he should be with his family right now, but with a look of pure disgust on his face, he calls her a whore and says that he has no family. Wow, I'm so impressed with Ed's acting here. He can do more than look lustful after all!

Dan goes home to Brooklyn where Rufus is rocking out solo to Lincoln Hawk's only song. Dan sniffs around and asks whether Rufus knows anything about Chuck's belief that Rufus caused Bart's death.
