The fact that
Gossip Girl returns for its second season this Monday actually makes me squeal with delight. As a grown man I should probably be ashamed of that fact, but I can't help myself. I've been dying to know what diabolical schemes the kids of the Upper East Side will cook up in season 2 of the CW series. Can the writers for the show possibly top the crazy antics that went on last year? We'll soon find out.
To get fans pumped for the return of the scandal-loving teens, the CW has released the first five minutes of the season premiere online. Read on to check it out, and decide for yourself if it's OMFG-worthy.
After a quick recap of the first season, the premiere of
Gossip Girl kicks off with Nate (
Chace Crawford) and his cougar of a girlfriend making out in a car. Nate explains that he and Serena have been keeping up the illusion of a relationship, that way he can get it on with a married woman and she can be free to mourn the loss of Dan. Meanwhile, Chuck (
Ed Westwick) is hanging with hot girls at a nearby beach, Serena (
Blake Lively) is moping, and Dan (
Penn Badgley) is back in New York making out with a never-before-seen girl. Scandalous!
I loved the way the first season of
Gossip Girl ended, but I'm happy they've thrown us for a loop and not gone with the expected hook-ups. Serena isn't actually with Nate, Dan isn't with Vanessa, and Blair and Chuck are continuing their love/hate relationship. Bringing in new love interests may annoy some viewers, but I think it's important to help the show grow. I get tired of the destined pairings that most shows shove down our throats. They quickly grow stagnant and boring, so I'm happy to see the
Gossip Girl gang exploring new opportunities.
If I have one complaint about the opening it's that I don't want Serena to be a sad sack at the beginning of the season. Yes, mourning over Dan is fine, but I like Serena when she lets loose and has a little fun. Surely there are hot guys in the Hamptons who could help her ignore some of that pain.
