When Glee returns for season 5, Sam Evans will have a new love interest, but this time around it won't be any of the series regulars that we've come to know and love over the past four years.

Phoebe Strole has been cast in the role of college sophomore Penny Owen, who hopes to attend nursing school and also catches the eye of high school senior Sam, played by Chord Overstreet. This will be a recurring role for her, according to Deadline.

Lea Michele revealed the casting news on Twitter: Such amazing news that two of my very best friends are going to be on #Glee this year! @ddlovato & @PhoebeStrole! Thank you @MrRPMurphy!"

How the two characters even meet, considering one's in high school and the other's in college, is unknown at this point. And we also don't know yet when she'll make her first appearance, whether it'll be in the premiere or in a later episode.

Sam's previous love interests include Quinn, Mercedes and Brittany.

Strole has a connection to two Glee cast members. She starred in the original run of Spring Awakening on Broadway with Lea Michele and guest star Jonathan Groff. (With her Broadway background, you would think she'd be involved in the New York storyline.) And she's also guest starred on 30 Rock, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Rescue Me, among others.

This news follows two big casting announcements this summer. American Idol season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert is joining the show in season 5. Chris Colfer revealed recently that "he's going to play [my character Kurt's] nemesis." And X Factor judge Demi Lovato will appear in at least six episodes as Dani, a struggling artist who's friends with Rachel and Santana. Both Lambert and Lovato will be sharing quite a few scenes together.

Are you excited that Sam will have a new love interest? And do you think she'll fit in well on the show?

Glee season 5 premieres September 26 at 9pm on FOX.
