Shia LeBeouf haters, I'm sorry.  Shia is a movie star.  His new film Eagle Eye, made with director D.J. Caruso, who also helmed Disturbia, came in number one at the box office this weekend, making a cool $29 million.  LeBeouf can carry a new movie, clearly, even one with little other star power that received only middling ratings.  The competition wasn't fierce, but it's a good omen for Shia's ascension to stardom.

The Diane Lane/Richard Gere weepfest Nights in Rodanthe got the rom-com crowd it was expected to, coming in a respectable second over the weekend.  The two other new films in the top ten were Fireproof (debuting at number four) and Spike Lee's war epic Miracle at St. Anna (debuting at number nine).  Fireproof's nearly $7 million gross is very impressive considering the small number of theaters showing the movie (839 in total).  If you've never heard of Fireproof, you're not alone.  The Kirk Cameron vehicle was heavily promoted in churches nationwide and, as such, the film is full of Christian metaphors.

Lakeview Terrace dropped nearly fifty percent in earnings over its second week, but still remained n third place.  Burn After Reading continues to perform well for the Coen Brothers, now up to nearly $50 million in total gross.  My Best Friend's Girl remains a disappointment and, hopefully, its poor showing will stop movie studios from giving Dane Cook starring roles in big films.  Probably not, though.
