'Dirty Sexy Money' at the Paley Festival

Peter KrauseDirty Sexy Money was easily one of the best shows to premiere at the beginning of the season, but unfortunately its run was short-lived.  Due to the writers' strike, the ABC series only had the opportunity to air ten episodes before production was halted.  Fans now have to wait months before season 2 of the series begins in the fall, but thanks to the recent Paley Festival in Los Angeles, we now have some hints on what to expect. Creator Craig Wright appeared at the gathering along with Peter Krause, William Baldwin, Blair Underwood, and other cast members to discuss the future of the soapy drama.

One thing that Wright confirmed is just how much Dirty Sexy Money we'll be seeing next season.  There were three additional episodes completed before the strike that have yet to air, but those will need to be tweaked to kick off the second season.  The show currently has a commitment for 13 episodes beyond that, as well as three additional scripts.

The series will be dealing with a big change behind the scenes now that Daniel Cerone, formerly of Dexter, has come on board as showrunner.  As for how his addition will affect season 2, Wright says, "We have found a way to sort of give the show a different kind of rhythm, so that even though we're telling as much story every week, we're telling a deeper story.  And we're just sort of going to relieve it of its emotional hyperactivity a little bit.  As Daniel said, we sort of went from climax to climax to climax and I think we want to give these characters - because we have this great cast - we want to give them all a chance to have the best possible scenes."

A big mystery still remaining from the first season is who was behind the murder of Nick's father.  Regarding that issue, Wright says, "We didn't start this show with a murder mystery so we wouldn't solve it." Executive producer Greg Berlanti followed up this comment by stating, "I think the audience will get a great sense of satisfaction of watching this next season, and [we'll] leave it at that."

Fans of the series will remember the big reveal that Brian Darling (Glenn Fitzgerald) was actually Nick's half-brother.  Craig Wright admitted that there was some discussion of having Karen (Natalie Zea) turn out to be Nick's half-sibling instead, which would have been extremely awkward considering their romantic past.  The idea was shot down due to Wright's reluctance to argue with the network.  "We want to do weird stuff," he adds.  "And so we want to save it up for the weird stuff we can really do."

Dirty Sexy Money will return with plenty of weird stuff in the fall.  It's a long wait, but hopefully it'll be worth it.

Would it have been more fun if Karen was Nick's half-sister?
Yes, that's a big, juicy scandal
No, I like Brian being the half-sibling
