Dexter really was saving the best for last. The gripping fourth season concluded with a horrific episode that didn't just leave fans in shock, but pushed the entire series into a whole new direction for next season. If you haven't seen the season 4 finale, stop reading this article now.
Final warning: Spoilers ahead!!!
Two significant things happened in "The Getaway." We got the ending we were expecting all-season long (Arthur landing on Dexter's killing table), though we also got the ending we never expected (Rita murdered in the bathtub). Yes, the latter was a horrible sight to endure especially with baby Harrison sitting on a pool of Rita's blood--- the exact scenario that led Dexter to become a serial killer, but it was a satisfying dilemma that brilliantly sealed the season and got me extremely excited for more.
I must admit that I initially thought Rita would die early this season when reports surfaced that Dexter would be killing off a significant character though my suspicion was completely erased as the show killed off Deb's love interest Lundy. Then last week, the show killed off Trinity's daughter, Christine, throwing me for a loop even more. Kudos to the people behind Dexter for being bold enough to end Rita's life!
With baby Harrison being "born in blood," will he be yet another serial killer in the making? Will Dexter shut down emotionally now that he's seen the consequences of juggling his dark passenger with family? Will he continue to be a single dad? So many questions will be haunting me until next season begins. For now, though, it looks like Rita's death will be sending our favorite serial killer into a darker path that won't be resolved anytime soon.
