'Desperate Housewives' Creator: Five-year Jump Idea Came from 'Lost'

Leading up to the premiere of its new season this Sunday, Desperate Housewives fans will finally know what happens to the residents of Wisteria Lane after the infamous five-year jump.  Recently, the ladies posed for the cover of TV Guide.  Remarkably, this is only the second time they appeared together on a magazine after season 1.  Desperate Housewives executive producer and creator Marc Cherry filled us in on the anticipated jump and admitted that it came from a show insanely famous for mangling time like there's no tomorrow.

“The idea for the five-year jump on Desperate Housewives really came from the executive producers of Lost,” revealed Cherry.  “I'm actually doing something unheard of in Hollywood.  I'm giving credit where credit is due…  We didn't need to do this, we wanted to do this.  It's given us all a new lease on life.  We're treating the season premiere like a pilot, as if we're meeting these women all over again.”

Taking it further, Cherry kidded that Desperate Housewives fans who aren't happy with the flash-forward should take their case somewhere else.

“For those of you who tune in to our season premiere and aren't absolutely thrilled with what we've come up with, I have a suggestion: Send your complaints to Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the executive producers of Lost.  After all, they're the ones to blame.”

If you recall, the five-year flash-forward revealed that time can be brutally harsh to some people.  Gaby (Eva Longoria Parker) is no longer the fabulous housewife that she is, but instead has grown fat and, gasp, ugly.  Susan (Teri Hatcher) is no longer with Mike (James Denton).  Lynette (Felicity Huffman) realizes that her kids are not the angels she thought them to be.  On the other side of the spectrum, Bree (Marcia Cross) and Katherine (Dana Delaney) are making like Martha Stewart, while Edie (Nicollette Sheridan) is back with rich, powerful Dave (Neal McDonough).

Apart from flash-forwards, Cherry revealed that an episode airing toward the end of October will consist entirely of flashbacks.

“As each of the ladies gets ready for the party, they remember key events that happened during the five years,” Cherry says.  “It's an important episode that will explain a lot about why these women have changed.”
