As if his CSI franchise is not enough, prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer has yet another police drama up his sleeve, and this time, it's on cable. Dark Blue, a "fast-paced" undercover police drama," premieres tonight on TNT, following the exploits of a crack undercover team of police officers who are so covert that even some of their colleagues have no idea they are involved.
On Dark Blue, Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) is a "deeply wounded" character who has lost his wife and much of his former life as he struggles to bring down bad guys through complex undercover assignments. His team includes recently married cop Ty Curtis (Omari Hardwick), who struggles with keeping personal relationships amidst his undercover job; morally ambiguous Dean Bendis (Logan Marshall-Green), whose activities make team members wonder if he's gone over to the bad side; and young female officer Jaimie Allen (Nicki Aycox), who is onboard for being an excellent liar.
Like Bruckheimer's other products, including
Without a Trace and the original
CSI and its spin-offs,
Dark Blue is said to be "infused with a dark grittiness" that extends to both characters and plot. Like the central characters of his other television series, McDermott's Carter Shaw is also dark, brooding, and obsessed with bringing justice to those who deserve it, even if he has to break some rules to get the job done.
According to preliminary reviews, much of
Dark Blue's weakness (or at least the pilot) lies on its predictability. So while most of the first episode delves on whether or not a member has gone over to the dark side (after working so close to them), the answer should be pretty obvious.
Catch the premiere of
Dark Blue tonight 10pm on TNT.
