After
Criminal Minds wraps up its third season, the crime drama will be bouncing back with fresh installments when the show returns for a fourth season as part of CBS' 2008-2009 fall primetime lineup. But before that, viewers will first have to accept the fact that someone is getting blown up in tonight's season ender.

As
Criminal Minds concludes its tumultuous third season, one of the show's seven FBI profilers will explode. Obviously, this is all part of the show's big cliffhanger secret so viewers will have to stay tuned next season when the series reveals who and why. Despite the agonizing anticipation, tonight's explosive cliffhanger appears to be a fitting conclusion to a chapter in which the investigators chased 19 installments worth of serial killers.
"Lo-Fi," the 20th episode of the third season of
Criminal Minds, finds the BAU team as they face one of their most difficult cases yet. Time is of the essence when the team is called to New York City to determine if a series of random shootings is the work of a single serial killer or a group of killers working together.
According to the
L.A. Times, tonight's finale will employ a
24-style format, including split screens, and even required the creation of a replica New York subway station since filming on a Los Angeles Metro line didn't cut it. When the cast started shooting last month, virtually no one on-set knew which character would be in the blast.
"It will be huge and costly," show runner and executive producer Ed Bernero said.
"I'm hoping they're not taking out the new guy. That's all I gotta say," pleaded
Joe Mantegna, who plays Special Agent David Rossi and is aware that the procedural drama had already lost two main characters in the past.
In addition to Mantegna,
Criminal Minds also stars
Thomas Gibson (Aaron Hotchner),
Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss),
Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan),
Matthew Gray Gubler (Dr. Spencer Reid),
AJ Cook (Jennifer) and
Kirsten Vangsness (Garcia).
